The Role
Reporting to the Director of the Commonwealth-State Engagement team the Assistant Director is responsible for the management and governance of the Skills Workforce Ministerial Council (SWMC), Skills Senior Officials’ Network (SSON).

The Commonwealth-State Engagement team’s responsibility includes the management of meeting agendas, papers, and briefings to support Skills Ministers and Skills Senior Officials during these meetings. The Commonwealth-State Engagement team is responsible for the arrangements and logistics of these meetings, including the interface with guests and hosts of each jurisdiction. The team is also responsible for the strategy and forward planning for SWMC and SSON as part of the shared stewardship of the national VET system.

Skills and Capabilities

Responsibilities of the EL1 may include:

  • Contributing to leading a team, in fast-paced, high-impact roles.
  • Establishing and promoting positive working relationships with the executive, ministerial offices, external stakeholders, and line areas across the portfolio.
  • Proactively identify and implement process and system improvements to deliver on the work programme under tight resources.
  • Work with limited direction while displaying flexibility, discretion, and judgement; and
  • Mentor and develop team members to create a highly effective and resilient team.

We are seeking one individual with the following skills and capabilities:

  • Experience in supervision, including the ability to manage APS staff in a dynamic and high-profile environment, to identify risk and escalate issues and solutions.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills, including proven ability to promote the government’s objectives and work effectively with stakeholders with diverging views and interests.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of autonomy to exercise strategic judgement, resolve issues and deliver quality outcomes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in secretariat, policy development, program design and/or Commonwealth – State relations would be highly valued.
The Opportunity
This position is available to Ongoing APS employees as a temporary transfer at level and/or a temporary performance (Acting) opportunity for a period of 12 months.

Eligibility
Our successful candidate will need to hold a valid Baseline clearance to undertake the role.
