As an Assistant Director you will bring the core capabilities we need to the role, related experience against the job duties and in leading team and ICT outcomes. Through your leadership experience and passion for empowering yourself and others, you will support the team and the division to adopt a learning mindset, think outside the box to help us continuously improve and proactively manage our risks, and be willing to grow in all that you do. You will have a love for enabling business outcomes and a creative, curious mindset that you can carry into your duties, playing a critical role in our ICT operational maturity journey. In these roles, you will bring your previous experience in either Network Operations or Cloud into the fold and help us build this critical capability within the division.

Who we are
The department’s ICT Division has spent the last 18-months achieving significant milestones that have kicked off a transformational journey focused on laying the foundation for a technologically advanced, secure, and independent ICT environment that is adaptable, innovative, and capable of supporting the diverse needs of our internal and external customers. Our people are passionate about collaboratively finding best-fit solutions, that continuously improve our digital service delivery, secure and stabilise our IT environment, and streamline the interactions that support the department’s delivery of government priorities.

The ICT Business and Governance Branch, is responsible for key enabling functions that underpin our ICT strategic planning, investment, purchases, governance, communications and operational workforce, working broadly across the division and the department. Our ICT Business Solution and Security Branch is responsible for the delivery of the ICT business solutions lifecycle from design to sustainment, as well as the department’s cyber security, adopting a security by design approach to solutions and artificial intelligence capability. The ICT Operational Services and Infrastructure Branch is responsible for the delivery and support of ICT services across the department, portfolio agencies and to Ministers. Responsibilities include network security and support, the delivery, deployment and support of remote and field ICT and critical incident response. Both positions reside in this branch and do require applicants to have the requisite experience and working knowledge in the technical fields advertised.

The Job
We currently have two exciting opportunities available, one for a Network Operations Team Leader and another for a Cloud Team Leader.

As Network Operations Team Leader you will:

  • Lead and manage a technical team and build their capability through coaching, providing performance feedback, conflict resolution and encouraging career development.
  • Manage DCCEEW Enterprise network infrastructure including LAN, MAN, WAN, Wireless.
  • Manage DCCEEW Datacentre Routing and Switching.
  • Research, review and evaluate projects to provide a robust, reliable, fit for purpose and well-maintained network in accordance with DCCEEW priorities.
  • Ensuring Service Requests Tasks, Incidents and Changes are managed in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with ICT Property and Security for any Departmental Property Projects, Constructions and Refurbishments to provide fit for purpose network and infrastructure.
  • Work and Collaborate with Internal and External Stakeholders for the delivery of network services to all Departmental Offices and Regional Sites across Australia.
  • Liaise and coordinate moves, adds, and changes with service providers and other stakeholders.
  • Perform incident management functions including stakeholder liaison, prioritisation, and resource allocation.
As Cloud Team Leader you will:
  • Lead and manage a cloud engineering team, fostering capability through mentoring, technical guidance, performance feedback, and professional development.
  • Manage DCCEEW’s Cloud platforms and infrastructure, including PaaS, and SaaS solutions across multi-cloud environments (e.g. AWS, Azure, M365).
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of cloud-based services including compute and storage.
  • Research, evaluate, and lead cloud transformation projects to deliver scalable, secure, and cost-efficient cloud services in alignment with DCCEEW strategic objectives.
  • Ensure all cloud-related Service Requests, Incidents, Problems, and Changes are handled efficiently and within agreed SLAs.
  • Collaborate with ICT Security, Architecture, and Application teams to ensure cloud services are integrated, secure, and aligned with enterprise standards.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders and external service providers to deliver robust and compliant cloud solutions to all DCCEEW offices and remote operations.
  • Coordinate cloud onboarding/offboarding activities, access provisioning, policy enforcement, and continuous improvement initiatives with key partners.
  • Perform incident and problem management in the cloud space, including escalation, communication, and root cause analysis.

Mandatory qualifications
As the Networks Operations Team Leader you will have demonstrated experience in managing:
  • LAN/WAN
  • Datacentre routing and switching
  • Zero trust networks
  • Network monitoring and packet capturing tools
  • Enterprise Firewalls
  • Network Access Controls Software (CISCO ISE or Aruba ClearPass)
As the Cloud Team Leader you will have experience in managing/operating:
  • Enterprise cloud environments (e.g. AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Cloud networking, security, and governance frameworks (e.g. IAM, VPC, NSG, Security Groups).
  • Hybrid cloud integration and on-premises connectivity (e.g. VPN, Direct Connect, ExpressRoute).
  • Monitoring, logging, and observability tools.
  • Cloud cost management, resource optimization, and licensing models.
  • Zero Trust principles, cloud-native security controls, and compliance standards.
Eligibility
Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.

Security Clearance - this position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Mandatory qualifications – your suitability for employment will be dependent on you holding relevant mandatory qualifications.

Pre-employment checks - your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period.
