Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.
Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the ‘Courts Group'.

The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court deals with major criminal and civil matters, plus appeals against decisions of lower courts.

About the Role

The Honourable Justice M Osborne is seeking a legally qualified person to be his Associate with an expected commencement in early November 2025. The date will be confirmed in the application process.
Justice M Osborne undertakes a wide variety of general commercial and corporations matters within the Commercial Court of the Supreme Court of Victoria including contract, equity and trusts, insolvency, corporations and partnerships, commercial torts, class actions and urgent duty judge matters. His Honour is the Judge in charge of the Commercial and Retail Leases List and the Insurance List. As a result, the successful applicant will have a genuine interest in commercial law.
His Honour strives for excellence in his work and the work of his chambers. You should have a very strong academic record and exceptional research skills. You will be highly organised and will be able to liaise in an efficient and professional manner with members of the legal profession, the Court, and the public.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience at the Court and contribute to the administration of justice. Post admission experience at a law firm (or similar) is desirable but not essential where a candidate otherwise has a strong academic record and relevant experience working in the legal profession.
Duties will include:
  • Undertaking high level legal research;
  • Assisting with the production of judgments, papers and presentations including proof-reading and editing;
  • Performing administrative tasks, including managing the demands of the Judge Managed Lists;
  • Acting as chambers' first point of contact, liaising with Court staff, the public, the media and the profession; and
  • Undertaking the duties of an Associate in court – electronically and in person. These include: communicating with practitioners; opening and closing the court; swearing in or affirming witnesses and interpreters; recording and maintaining a repository of documents and exhibits.
