About the opportunity
As we continue to embark on our transformation journey, modernising and scaling our engineering function is critical. We are thrilled to create our inaugural Chief Engineer (Head of Software Engineering) position at AusPost. This pivotal senior leadership role leads the strategic evolution of Australia Post’s software engineering capability, championing innovation, excellence, and transformation across the enterprise. As the architect of our core shared platforms and engineering practice, the Chief Software Engineer drives the delivery of scalable, high-impact digital solutions that power our business and elevate customer experience.
What you’ll deliver with us
You will be responsible for leading and mentoring a large multidisciplinary team of software engineers, promoting best practices, continuous learning, and a culture of excellence across the enterprise. Along with this you will also;
- Define and govern engineering patterns, practices, systems, and tools to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency across all software development teams.
- Lead the engineering of core shared platforms, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and reusable to support multiple business units and applications.
- Provide thought leadership in software engineering, including collaborating with AP Labs on technical innovation, research, and the adoption of emerging technologies.
- Drive the use of AI and automation across the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), from requirements gathering and design to testing, deployment, and maintenance.
- Own Developer Experience holistically, including standardisation and management of modern CI/CD pipelines and developer tools, ensuring robust, secure, and repeatable software delivery.
- Oversee the design, development, and deployment of software applications and shared platforms, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture, security standards, and business requirements.
- Monitor and optimise software performance, reliability, and scalability, while managing technical debt and legacy system modernisation.
- Establish metrics and KPIs to measure engineering productivity, quality, and innovation, reporting on progress to executive leadership.

- Propose and lead the discovery and trialling of impactful solutions that drive business value and delight our customer with innovative, market leading customer experiences.
- Showcase to the business and customers new technology and ideas to promote new experiences and different ways of working.
- Provide clear and compelling communication of Engineering initiatives to executive, business, and technical audiences.
- Develop executive-ready artefacts, white papers, and strategic proposals.

You’ll cultivate a high-performance culture, embed cutting-edge technologies—including agentic AI—and spearhead automation and modernisation initiatives that unlock agility and operational efficiency. Collaborating across functions, you’ll ensure consistency, resilience, and future-readiness in everything we build.
