About The Opportunity

This is a permanent part-time opportunity working 3 days (21 hours) per week and will be based at Uniting Counselling and Mediation in Wollongong- must be available to work Wednesdays 11am – 7pm fortnightly

As a Child and Family counsellor, you will provide individual therapy, family therapy and group-based support to children and young people. You’ll also engage with parents to help strengthen the parent-child relationship and reduce the chronic stress and trauma symptoms children are experiencing post-separation.

Uniting Counselling and Mediation has a long history of high-quality service delivery, being well regarded and connected with Family Law stakeholders. As an Anchor counsellor, you will provide individual therapy, family therapy and group-based support to children and young people. You’ll also engage with parents to help strengthen the parent-child relationship and reduce the chronic stress and trauma symptoms children are experiencing post-separation through psycho-educational and therapeutic groups.

About You In The Role

  • Help children and young people, and their parents navigate the challenges of parental separation and divorce through a 6 to 10 session model.
  • Facilitate therapeutic group programs for children, young people, and parents.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team through regular case discussions, team meetings, and professional development.
  • Client-facing work per day, with time dedicated to supervision, documentation, and training.
  • Contribute to the rollout of modality-specific interventions, including trauma-focused CBT.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, or related field.
  • Experience working therapeutically with children, young people (0–18), and/or parents.
  • Understanding of child protection issues and trauma-informed practice.
  • Culturally sensitive, with the ability to view situations through a cultural lens.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and writing skills
  • Confidence working independently and collaboratively in a team
  • Eligibility for membership with a relevant professional body.

Even better

  • Knowledge of and experience working in the context of DFV and high-conflict family dynamics.
  • Experience working with involuntary or court-ordered clients
  • Group facilitation experience and knowledge of the Family Law Act 1975
  • Training in trauma-focused approaches (e.g., CBT, play therapy).
