Primary objective
As part of the senior management team, provide leadership and initiative in the formation and implementation of Youth in Detention
campus policy regarding curriculum and associated teaching and learning pedagogy and work collaboratively with the Head of Campus
and the Principal.
Context statement
Top End School of Flexible Learning is an alternative secondary education setting with multiple campus sites. It is a flexible learning school
for disengaged and at-risk teenagers in the Darwin, Palmerston and Rural area. TESoFL aims to engage a range of young people at risk of
social isolation, juvenile justice involvement, low education outcomes and unemployment and who may be in care.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Undertake an appropriate teaching load and be responsible for specific administrative duties related to service delivery in this setting.
This position is based at the Tivendale Campus within the Youth Detention Facility at Holtze.
2. Lead the implementation of whole school approaches regarding curriculum, assessment and wellbeing, consistent with school and NT
DoE policies and guidelines.
3. Deliver projects and strategies to support young people who have experienced adverse childhood experiences.
4. Build educators instructional skills so they can improve classroom instruction within a Youth Detention school environment, student
engagement and capable and independent learners. Providing professional learning to staff aligned to the Annual School Improvement
Plan.
5. Work collaboratively in the collection of data to support the learning needs of individual students and their specific pathway.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Highly developed current knowledge of Department of Education policies and recent experience in leading the development of
appropriate pedagogy, quality curriculum and integrated teaching programs and strategies as best practice for adolescent students
who have experienced adverse childhood experiences.
2. Evidence of recent experience in delivering high level professional learning that allows teachers and support staff to develop
appropriate pedagogy and curriculum appropriate for students with complex presentations in youth detention or similar contexts.
3. Successful teaching experience particularly with adolescents including Aboriginal students who speak languages other than English.
4. Proven experience in the behavioural management of adolescent students using effective interpersonal skills including the ability to
negotiate and manage conflict resolution and apply flexible learning methodologies.
5. Demonstrated ability to work both as an effective team member and team leader and proven capability in developing and maintaining
comprehensive and effective professional networks to achieve outcomes.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant personnel, agencies and government departments that can provide appropriate services for
youth at risk.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of juvenile justice system and support agencies for youth at risk.
