Purpose of the role

The purpose of this position is to support the ELC teaching staff in the sharing of knowledge and supervision of allocated
children under the age of 6 years for a specified period of time in an environment of care, respecting the individual’s learning
style and ability.

The Co-educator understands and complies with the College’s strategic intent and with the goal/s and key activity/activities as
articulated for this position’s team or area of work.

This role specifically works in the ELC Kindergarten Program and ELC Extended Hours Program.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

Assists ELC Teachers:
• Participate in discussions about the teaching program, taking into consideration intentional learning with a child-centred

play based approach.
  • Assist in the daily planning of classroom activities which support the learning program
  • Works with individual students and groups of students, assisting progression within the learning program based on the
child’s/children’s motivation
  • Attend official school functions and special events as required.
  • Contribute to ensuring the Early Learning Centre is at all times compliant in relation to all Department of Education,

Education and Care Services National Law Act 2011, Education and Care Services, National Regulations 2018, VEYLDF and
the National Quality Framework

  • Foster a supportive and respectful learning environment through the development of relationships inspired by the school’s
values


Prepares the classroom for learning
The ELC Co-educator ensures that the classroom and outdoor play space is prepared daily to support learning activities:

  • Re-arranges room layout to enhance the day’s activities
  • Sets out equipment and resources required by the day’s activities
  • Enhances student work for display: e.g. framing artwork
  • Displays student work to encourage learning
  • Keeps classroom and adjacent areas clean (kitchen, shelves, bathroom)
  • Documents individual and group work to assist in the assessment of the students



  • Organises equipment on shelves
  • Supports classroom activities in kindergarten, after school care and holiday programs
  • Assists with communication to parents
  • Carries out administrative and documentation duties



Selection Criteria

Experience

  • Proven experience in a similar role, supporting classroom activities in kindergarten, after school care and holiday
programs
  • Demonstrated experience in an ELC environment, assisting the ELC Teachers
  • Demonstrated experience with setting up the room, ready for the day, clean up and pack up
  • Involvement in, or contributions to, the school community beyond the classroom
  • Evidence of regular involvement in professional learning

Skills and attributes

  • Understanding of fostering children’s independence and autonomy
  • Passionate about nurturing and growing children’s minds with a kind and professional approach
  • Take pride that learning spaces are immaculately presented as a welcoming and safe environment for the children
  • Capacity to accommodate different student learning styles and abilities
  • Ability to develop constructive relationships with children and their parents
  • High level communication and interpersonal skills when relating to children, parents and staff
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Knowledge of child safe practices, including reporting requirements

Qualifications and Employer Requirements

  • Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care
  • Working with Children’s check
  • Entitled to live and work in Australia
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Completion of Protecting Children – Mandatory Reporting and Other Obligations (training provided by DoE Victoria)
  • Anaphylaxis Certified
