The Opportunity
SunPork Consolidated Pty Ltd is seeking a Farm Manager (Piggery) to directly manage the day-to-day operations of our Roseworthy Facility while providing effective leadership to the team. This position is full time and will be based out of our Piggery in Wasleys, South Australia.
Responsibilities, tasks, and duties:
Reporting to the Production and Technical Manager, the Farm Manager of our Roseworthy Piggery takes ownership and accountability for maintaining a high level of health, safety and well-being for both employees and animals.
This position will be required to carry out the following tasks:
- Managing Piggery Operation: Overseeing all aspects of the breeding, farrowing, weaners, growers, bacon sales, and pigs’ transfer process, ensuring the pigs’ health at all stages.
- Staff Management: Hiring, training, and supervising farm staff, including assigning tasks and monitoring performance.
- Health and Safety: Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and implementing measures to maintain a safe working environment.
- Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate records related to farrowing activities, including sow health, piglet numbers, and treatments.
- Administration paperwork: Procurement of feed, medication, consumables, repair materials, semen doses and others.
- Budget Management: Monitoring and managing the budget for the farrowing operation, including expenses for feed, medications, and equipment.
- Facility Maintenance: Overseeing the maintenance of farrowing facilities, including repairs and upgrades as needed.
- Biosecurity: Implementing and maintaining biosecurity protocols to prevent the spread of disease within the farm.
- Collaboration: Working closely with other farm managers and staff to coordinate activities and ensure overall farm success.
- Continuous Improvement: Identifying opportunities for process improvement and implementing changes to increase efficiency and productivity.
- Animal Welfare: Ensuring that all animals are treated humanely and in accordance with industry standards and regulations.
- External relationships: Working closely with the University of Adelaide and SARDI staff, to organize and facilitate research to be conducted in the unit, as well student visits.
Qualifications and Experience:
Our preferred candidate will have the below:
- A bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Animal Science or similar
- Thorough understanding of the operations and requirements of a herd production facility
- Minimum of 1 years' experience in a piggery attendant role or equivalent – (essential)
- Experience in a leadership, training, or supervisory capacity – (preferred)
- Strong planning and organizational abilities to meet targets and uphold company policies
- Exceptional stockperson skills, with a commitment to applying the highest standards of animal welfare and Biosecurity measures
- Outstanding people management skills to motivate and lead teams to success
- Ability to oversee site and facilities, managing human resources, safety requirements, and documentation
- Maintenance and compliance of the Company Quality Assurance Program for the site
- Proven track record of enhancing productivity through continuous improvement initiatives
- Application of mandatory WHS and QA standards
- Certificate III in pork production, Certificate IV or higher in Agriculture, or significant relevant experience
- Excellent collaboration skills to build strong relationships with stakeholders
- Availability to work weekends and Public Holidays as required
- Forklift and tractor licence advantageous
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Intermediate computer proficiency
