About the opportunity
The Forensic Medicine service provides support for bereaved families needing answers following the report of a death to the coroner. The service plays a pivotal role in delivering justice and improving the health and safety of communities across NSW. Forensic Medicine Newcastle is seeking a highly motivated, experienced and compassionate administration officer to join our Funeral Without Funds team. They will work as part of a multidiscplinary team responsible for the preparation of applications for burial or cremation of a deceased person without financial means where the death occurred in the community or was reported to the NSW coroner.

What you'll be doing

The service plays a pivotal role in delivering justice and improving the health and safety of communities across NSW. Forensic Medicine Newcastle is seeking a highly motivated, experienced and compassionate administration officer to join our Funeral Without Funds team. They will work as part of a multidiscplinary team responsible for the preparation of applications for burial or cremation of a deceased person without financial means where the death occurred in the community or was reported to the NSW coroner.

The position will be responsible for providing administrative support including registering cases, preparing documentation, answering incoming phone calls, monitoring emails and ensuring tasks and actions are appropriately allocated and recorded for staff involved in related activities. The administration officer may be required to make contact with key stakeholders on behalf of staff to support enquiries. They will also be responsible for general office duties as required. Applicants should be aware that they may be exposed to distressing and traumatic information.

  • Demonstrated experience in providing administrative and secretarial support in a high volume work environment, requiring minimal supervision
  • Highly developed computer skills, including proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office packages to complete work activities
  • Demonstrated sound knowledge of medical terminology, and a minimum typing speed of 50 WPM with 98% accuracy using digital transcription equipment
  • Excellent customer service skills and proven experience in handling distressed customers/clients, and knowing when to escalate matters appropriately
  • Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner in a team environment, and to effectively communicate with all members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated time management skills and capacity to prioritise workloads, taking into account the impact on others to achieve results to meet deadlines
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in an environment that could be distressing, ensuring to raise any associated concerns and/or need for support, and adopt self-care strategies
  • Demonstrated capacity to adopt and model the NSWHP RITE values of Respect, Integrity, Teamwork and Excellence
