About the Unit:

Fingerprint Sciences Group (FSG):

The primary functions of the FSG are the recovery and identification of fingerprint evidence from casework and the maintenance and administration of known fingerprint samples in accordance with Section 464 of the Victorian Crimes Fingerprint Act 1958. Evidence from crime scenes and samples from unknown persons are examined to recover and identify fingerprint evidence and link persons of interest to casework.

The FSG provides a range of services which include:

  • ; Crime scene and exhibit examinations
  • ; Processing evidence from crime scenes
  • ; Processing and management of 10 print fingerprint forms
  • ; Forensic intelligence and support to frontline members
  • ; Providing evidence in Courts of Law

About the Role

Contribute to ensuring a high level of fingerprint service delivery, by providing technical and administrative support in relation to fingerprint casework management and evidence recovery.

As the successful applicant, some of your duties will include:

  • Processing and management of ten print fingerprint records on the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS).
  • Conduct analysis of samples and initial examination of exhibits under direction and supervision within defined parameters.
  • Attend the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) for the purposes of fingerprinting deceased persons.
  • Present factual evidence in Courts of Law where required.
  • Operate and maintain existing systems and processes including technical and scientific equipment.
  • Conduct quality controls within work area, including keeping records where necessary.
  • Regularly interact and liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders to provide specialist information.
  • Maintain and update record systems (including PaLM, NAFIS and LEAP).
  • Assist in prioritising tasks in order to achieve service delivery targets.
  • Solve routine problems using readily available information.
  • Required to work as part of a collaborative team.
  • Provide general administrative assistance, respond to customer enquiries, maintain records and compile reports.

Skills & Experience

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Ability to undertake scientific/technical examinations following established procedures.
  • Experience with the operation and maintenance of relevant scientific instrumentation.
  • Proven administrative skills including the maintenance of detailed and accurate records.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on the ability to impart specialist knowledge and advice to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work autonomously and/or in a team environment and to manage workloads in order to meet defined/agreed targets and deadlines.
  • Prepare reports and provide results on technical matters relevant to own work area.
  • An understanding of the customer service requirements of the position and a demonstrated record of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs.
  • A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct and the Organisational Values.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • Ongoing Forensic Officer level 2 position available.
  • Position is located at 31 Forensic Drive Macleod.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification would be desirable.
  • Complete the relevant discipline specific graduate certificate.
  • Possess a current Victorian Driver Licence and qualify for an appropriate Victoria Police driving authority within three (3) months.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only).
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
