Grant-Funded Researcher (A) - Photocatalytic Materials for Environmental Remediation

The University of Adelaide
$78,544 - $105,611 a year
South Australia
Full time

(Level A) $98,574 to $105,611 plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies.

2-year Fixed term position, with possibility of extension.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Research Associate to join an ARC-funded Discovery Project focused on developing innovative solutions for the degradation of persistent fluorinated pollutants. This collaborative project brings together expertise in physical chemistry, materials science, and environmental toxicology to address a global pollution challenge.

Building on recent breakthroughs by Dr. Shearer and A/Prof. Kee, this project investigates quantum dot (QD) photocatalysts capable of degrading perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to fluoride via highly reducing species. The research will optimise light-activated colloidal particles to produce various highly reducing species, while also assessing the toxicity of degradation by-products.

To be successful in this role, you will hold (or be near completion of) a PhD in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field. You will have highly developed verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations. The role requires strong analytical and laboratory skills, particularly in nanoparticle synthesis and chemical analysis, as well as experience in maintaining accurate laboratory records and managing experimental data effectively. A demonstrated commitment to ethical research conduct and alignment with the University’s values and behavioural expectations is essential.

To be successful you will need:

  • A PhD degree in a relevant field (Chemistry or Materials Science or Chemical Engineering) with subsequent relevant experience
  • Demonstrated evidence of contribution towards research relevant to one or more of: quantum dot synthesis, Auger recombination, advanced reduction techniques, quantitative analysis of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and remediation of PFAS
  • Experience in producing quality journal publications
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a research unit or comparable environment
  • Ability to provide advice and support to post graduate students
  • Computer literacy including skills in data management, analysis and presentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
