Toowoomba Grammar School (TGS) is seeking a Head of Athletics & Head Coach to lead and develop its athletics and cross-country programs, including the Blazers Athletics Club.
This key role within the Co-curricular Department will be responsible for the strategic direction, planning, and delivery of training and competition across cross country and track & field from Prep to Year 12. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Sport, teachers, coaches, and operational staff to foster a culture of participation, excellence, and high performance.
About TGS
TGS was founded in 1875 and is a member school of the Great Public Schools Association of Queensland (GPS). It is an independent non-denominational day and boarding school for boys with a total enrolment of 1,200 from Preparatory to Year 12. There are approximately 300 boarders in the School coming predominantly from throughout Queensland, Northern New South Wales and the Northern Territory. The School’s campus covers 20.5 hectares and is located one kilometre from the centre of Toowoomba.

About the Position
Reporting to the Head of Sport, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading the schools track & field and cross-country programs, with a focus on technical coaching, athlete development, and competition readiness. They will oversee the delivery of the GPS seasons, support affiliated clubs such as Blazers and Little Athletics, drive talent identification and athlete pathway initiatives, and coordinate ongoing coach education within the program. Strong leadership, strategic planning, and technical event expertise - combined with clear and effective communication, will be essential in enhancing the student-athlete experience and sustaining high program standards
Selection Criteria:
You will be able to demonstrate your ability and commitment to:
- Qualifications & Industry Experience: Demonstrated attainment of a minimum Level 2 Track and Field accreditation, with a preference for candidates holding a Level 3 Performance Development Coach qualification. Experience in a school or educational setting will be highly regarded.
- Leadership & Program Management: Proven ability to lead, manage, and deliver comprehensive athletics programs, including planning, coordinating, and evaluating training, competitions, and events across multiple year levels and athletic disciplines. Experience in managing teams of coaches and volunteers is essential.
- Technical Coaching Expertise: Strong knowledge of athletic training principles, injury prevention strategies, and strength and conditioning program design
- Administrative & Organisational Skills: Demonstrated capacity to manage complex schedules, training logistics, budgets, and reporting requirements, including competition entries, coach appointments, uniforms, and program evaluation. Ability to meet deadlines and prioritise competing tasks in a dynamic school environment.
- Communication & Stakeholder Engagement: Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and external organisations. Demonstrated experience in providing feedback, mentoring coaches, and liaising with governing bodies and community stakeholders.
- Commitment to Student Development & School Culture: A passion for fostering student growth, wellbeing, and participation through athletics. Proven ability to contribute to a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and enjoyment, aligned with the School’s values and the Little Athletics philosophy of “Family, Fun, and Fitness.”
