About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for an experienced Heritage Manager , University Infrastructure within the University Infrastructure team, to lead the development and delivery of culturally appropriate heritage management strategies, systems, and processes across the University of Sydney campus’. The Heritage Manager , University Infrastructure is responsible for the effective management and conservation of the University’s heritage assets, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and alignment with University priorities.

As the University’s principal heritage expert, you will provide authoritative advice to senior leadership, manage the annual program of Conservation Management Planning, and contribute to the delivery of the Heritage Asset Management Strategy. You will represent the University in negotiations with regulators, government agencies, and key stakeholders, applying your deep knowledge of heritage legislation and regulatory frameworks to achieve successful outcomes in a complex environment.

This role requires exceptional leadership, innovation, and problem-solving skills to navigate a diverse regulatory landscape and expedite approvals while maintaining strong heritage outcomes. You will also lead a specialist team, collaborating closely with University planning functions to support strategic initiatives and planning approvals.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • resolve complex, significant and high level heritage planning and approvals to support UI program performance. This requires the application of a high level of heritage subject matter and applied knowledge

  • provide expert heritage advice and expertise on the effective management and conservation of the University’s items of heritage significance to inform evidence-based decision making

  • lead and manage specialised heritage projects and initiatives to foster ongoing continuous improvement and innovation across the heritage portfolio in line with relevant University and legislative requirements

  • ensure the heritage status of buildings, properties, site and objects are recorded and kept up to date with statutory and non-statutory rankings of heritage significance

  • devise innovative solutions whilst regarding heritage conservation considerations and ensuring planned work is compatible with the heritage principles taking into consideration associated building regulations.

About you

  • postgraduate qualifications - In a relevant field or an equivalent combination of training and experience

  • knowledge of NSW Heritage Act 1977 (mandatory) and relevant State Environmental Planning Policies (mandatory)

  • Knowledge of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 (mandatory)

  • knowledge of the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (mandatory)

  • knowledge and experience in the government heritage regulatory environment at all levels of government

  • excellent organisational, time and workload management skills with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, and prioritise effectively to meet deadlines

  • experience in a large complex organisation including the tertiary environment (desirable)

  • demonstrated knowledge of contemporary heritage practice covering policy, architectural issues, Aboriginal Cultural Competencies, lands, places and buildings

  • knowledge of and commitment to implementing the University of Sydney’s Code of Conduct (desirable).
