About the Opportunities

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced leader to join our Health, Safety and Staff Wellbeing Directorate as a Leader, Emergency Response (Clerk Grade 9/10). This is a high-impact role supporting NSW schools and workplaces across the state by leading critical response and recovery services during major incidents and emergencies.


As a key member of our Emergency Response team, you’ll coordinate and lead support services during emergencies, liaise NSW schools, government agencies such as the NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Police Force and NSW Rural Fire Service, and contribute to long-term improvements in emergency management. You’ll also provide after-hours response services as part of the NSW emergency management arrangements as required and play a crucial role in building the department’s preparedness and resilience.

About the role


As a Leader, Emergency Response, you will play a key role in ensuring the Department is prepared for, responds to, and recovers from emergencies and major incidents across all NSW schools and workplaces. This role requires strong coordination skills, the ability to lead during critical situations, and a focus on building and maintaining effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.


You will be responsible for:


  • Coordinating and delivering support services for NSW schools during emergency response and recovery efforts across the state.
  • Working as part of a dedicated team to manage major incidents in line with relevant policies, legislation, and procedures.
  • Representing the department as a liaison officer and on interagency committees and working groups, and ensure after-hours support is available for serious incidents or emergencies.
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships with NSW schools, emergency management committees, and other government agencies.
  • Represent Education on interagency committees and working groups to promote collaboration and effective communication in emergency management.
  • Partner with the Manager, Emergency Response to design and implement plans, programs, and initiatives that meet operational needs.
  • Preparing high-quality reports, briefing notes, submissions, and correspondence to support informed decision-making by senior executives.

About you


To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Strong leadership and coordination skills in high-pressure environments
  • Experience in emergency management or incident response.
  • The ability to build and maintain effective relationships with senior stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills and builds trusted relationships with stakeholders at all levels
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, plans, and response frameworks

Essential requirements of the role


  • Current and valid driver’s license and an ability and willingness to travel between work sites
  • Working with Children Check for paid employment or willingness to obtain one
  • Tertiary qualifications and/or experience in a related field
  • Willingness to work across a seven-day roster during a major event and on call to support emergency response.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department’s Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department’s Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.
