About the branch
The Litigation & Dispute Resolution Branch is a team of approximately 60 lawyers and an additional team of 35 (approx.) legal support staff (including paralegals) that provide specialist legal services to government departments and statutory bodies.
The branch enjoys an extraordinary diversity of exciting and challenging litigation and advisory work, working on matters that are topical and often involve public interest issues. The day-to-day work of the branch includes:
- State care, personal injury and negligence claims (including institutional abuse claims involving minors and young persons who were formerly in the care of the State)
- General civil, police civil and tortious claims
- Applications under the Crimes Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried Act 1997 (Vic)
- Coronial investigations including inquests
- Contempt of court, defamation, injunctions, vexatious litigant applications, commercial litigation, judicial review and statutory interpretation matters
- Subpoenas to government departments
About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for an eager and enthusiastic Legal Assistant to join our Litigation and Dispute Resolution Branch. The role will provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative support to a team of solicitors.
- Responsibilities will include:
- Preparing, formatting and reviewing legal documentation, including correspondence and court documents
- Liaising with barristers' clerks and preparing briefs for counsel, inclusive of the collation of e-briefs
- Filing and service of court documents via online platforms
- Autonomous file management - administration of matter related tasks, monthly billing and maintaining efficient and effective electronic files
- Calendar and mailbox management
- General administration duties

Skills and experience
- Demonstrated experience as a legal assistant in a litigation environment
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- The ability to provide high quality assistance to a team of solicitors, in a fast paced, deadline driven environment
- Strong understanding of legal processes and court jurisdictions, legal terminology, with the ability to undertake research using online databases
- A proactive and solutions-focused approach, with strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail
