Primary objective
Provide high level project support, administration and advice in relation to the maintenance, ongoing improvement and promotion
of the department’s emergency management and work health and safety arrangements.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Initiate, develop and implement operational emergency management and training initiatives which ensure compliance with
legislation, regulations and standards, and provide opportunities to ensure continual improvement in prevention/mitigation,
preparedness, response and recovery plans.
2. Provide advice to the CEO, Heads of Division, Leadership Group, Work Health and Safety Management Committee, Emergency
Management Committee, other senior managers, directors and staff on a range of emergency management and WHS matters
in accordance with relevant legislation.
3. Proactively identify and provide support to the Heads of Division and the Leadership Group in operational emergency and WHS
related risk in consultation with cost centre managers to ensure appropriate, innovative solutions are developed.
4. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
5. Deliver training in emergency management in line with procedures and guidelines.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Well-developed oral and written communication skills with an ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders to assess
needs, assist with the emergency planning process and resolve problems.
2. Demonstrated experience in negotiating to persuade staff on the ground and senior managers to accept recommendations,
cooperate and work with others towards mutually acceptable solutions in effectively applying the emergency management
principles of prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
3. Experience in the production, communication, and dissemination of information and ideas to inform emergency response
activities through appropriate communication channels including media communications.
4. Understanding of emergency planning and disaster response coordination and knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations,
standards and directives relating to emergency planning and preparedness and business continuity.
5. Ability to educate a diverse range of staff through formal or informal methods, identifying training needs, providing constructive
feedback on plans and activities and coaching a broad range of staff on how to undertake the required drills and emergency
exercise programs to test plans and preparedness for an emergency.
6. Understanding of cross-cultural issues and sensitivities in relation to urban, rural and remote areas.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in emergency response, WHS or other relevant discipline.
2. A Certificate IV Training and Assessment.
