What You’ll Be Doing
As a Mechanical Officer at the Rural Fire Service, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining and repairing our fleet of emergency vehicles and equipment. Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting routine inspections, servicing, and preventative maintenance.
- Diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues in both light and heavy vehicles.
- Performing critical checks on firefighting equipment, including rescue boats.
- Tracking, monitoring, and reporting maintenance work using our corporate asset system.
- Providing expert advice and recommendations to enhance fleet performance.
While most of your work will be based at our Terrey Hills workshop, you may be required to respond to urgent call-outs—even outside of normal business hours—to keep our fleet operational when it matters most.
A Day in the Life
No two days are the same in this role, and that’s exactly how we like it. One day, you could be conducting routine maintenance: the next, you’re responding to an urgent repair to get a frontline firefighting vehicle back on the road.

To thrive in this role, you will:
- Be a fully qualified Mechanic and have extensive experience and knowledge across all areas of light and heavy motor vehicle repair.
- Have a comprehensive and demonstrated understanding of relevant legislation and policies related to heavy vehicles.
- Have experience in boat maintenance.
- Be proactive and experienced in preventative maintenance.
- Be able to demonstrate experience in maintaining records related to works carried out.
- Have an understanding and appreciation of volunteer culture.
