The Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) will provide expert medical assessment and management of people requesting access to Voluntary Assisted Dying under the NSW Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022 as part of the MLHD VAD Care Navigator Service. This role will be a part of a pool of specialists that will fulfil the Coordinating, Consulting and or Administering Practitioner roles within the VAD process.

Where you'll be working

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) spans 125,243 square kilometres across southern New South Wales, stretching from the Snowy Mountains in the east to the plains of Hillston in the northwest and all the way along the Victorian border.

As the largest employer in the region, with over 5,000 healthcare staff working across 33 hospitals and 12 primary health care centres, we are supported by hundreds of volunteers who make an invaluable contribution to enriching the lives of people in our care.

The base location of these roles are negotiable, however travel across the district will be required.

What you'll be doing

The MLHD Visiting medical Officer Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) is a key role to enable access of people to VAD services across MLHD in accordance with legislative requirements. The practitioner is required to complete mandatory education and training prior to undertaking the role of Coordinating/Consulting and Administering Practitioner.

There are 3 key roles as a VMO VAD: Coordinating Practitioner, Consulting Practitioner and/or Administering Practitioner.

VMO’s are able provide services in one, or a combination of the following:

The role of Coordinating Practitioner accepts care of a patient seeking VAD, oversees the progress of the referral and assessment process, conducting required assessments, consultation and documentation as outlined in the Act.

The Consulting practitioner independently completes a consulting assessment to confirm patient eligibility in addition to the coordinating practitioners initial first assessment. The Consulting assessment must be conducted following referral from an alternate coordinating practitioner. The alternate coordinating practitioner first assessment may be conducted in the primary care setting or private health sector.

The role of the authorised administering practitioner is an essential component of the VAD process at the patients end of life. The role provides holistic person-centred care and compassionate support to the patient’s family and carer network.

The practitioner will provide senior medical leadership and maintain key relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders to enable equitable access for patients withing the region to VAD.

Selection Criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered as a Specialist with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of a recognised Australasian Specialist College or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia and/or practiced in the medical profession for at least 10 years as the holder of General Registration and be in a General Practice training fellowship pathway.
  • Consistently demonstrates behaviors that reinforce the CORE Values of NSW Health, Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviors with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  • Demonstrated strong communication and teamwork skills as they apply to clinical care and clinical decision making for the provision of VAD services.
  • Sound knowledge of and commitment to clinical quality and patient safety, work health and safety, working within NSW Health Policy and current clinical practice guidelines.
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of the NSW Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing self-education and professional development, including evidence of participation in continuing medical education and continuing professional development.
  • Completed or will complete VAD Authorised Practitioner mandatory training.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to travel within MLHD to provide VAD services to people requesting VAD
