Justice Connect’s Not-for-profit Law is Australia’s only dedicated community legal service for not-for-profits and charities. Our acclaimed self-help website (www.nfplaw.org.au) has over 300 legal resources and is the foundation of our service model. We offer legal advice and educational services to organisations across Australia, and advocate for improved standards and legal frameworks for the not-for-profit sector.

In addition, we run a certified legal training social enterprise and deliver a dedicated service for Local Aboriginal Land Councils in NSW.

Important role information

The position reports to the Senior Lawyer, Local Aboriginal Land Council Service

Employment is part time (22.5 hours per week) fixed term until 30 June 2026.

The role will ideally start in September 2025.

The salary for this role is $75,109.65 per annum (pro rata), plus 12% superannuation with annual leave loading and generous salary packaging options.

This role will be based at our Sydney CBD offices with 40% of the month in the workplace with hybrid working arrangements.

Our ideal candidate

You'll bring to the team experience in the following areas:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, in particular the ability to communicate with a diverse range of people and stakeholders in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Experience working with First Nations people or community-controlled organisations (highly desirable).
  • Sound computer skills (within a legal practice environment preferred) including database and client file management skills (experience with Microsoft Dynamics highly desirable)
  • An aptitude for problem solving including the use of initiative, creativity, humour and people skills to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Highly motivated and professional with a strong work ethic, positive attitude and demonstrated ability to work in a team.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Justice Connect's vision, strategy and values.

Expertise that you have that would support our team:

  • Bachelor of Laws Degree (or final or near-final year student enrolled in Bachelor of Laws/JD), or other relevant qualification or experience.

What you will achieve in the role

In this role, you’ll work with the Local Aboriginal Land Council Service team to deliver free tailored support for the network of 120 Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) across NSW.

You’ll do this by:

  • Working closely with LALCs by phone and email to take clear and comprehensive instructions, administering each step of the intake process with careful attention to detail.
  • Providing critical administrative support to the Senior Lawyer in the provision of legal services to LALCs including:
  • Triaging enquires from LALCs (including assessment of matters eligible for legal advice and pro bono referrals to Justice Connect member law firms and barristers)
  • Providing legal information to LALCs, where appropriate.
  • Facilitating pro bono referrals to Justice Connect member law firms and barristers.
  • Monitoring pro bono referrals and supporting member law firms and barristers to assist LALCs.
  • Monitoring and maintaining client and other databases to ensure that data and record keeping is complete, current and accurate.

A week in this role

If you were here last week, you would have:

  • Connected with LALCs by phone and email, demonstrating your exceptional communication skills by overseeing the intake process and taking clear instructions to facilitate access to legal support through the provision of information, advice, pro bono referrals and referrals to other services.
  • Monitored and maintained up to date client records, administering multiple client files concurrently (opening, closing, periodic checks and evaluation) and other general paralegal and administrative duties.
  • Supported the Senior Lawyer with document review, legal research and drafting correspondence (with clients, law firms, and stakeholders).
  • Supported the Senior Lawyer with the coordination of training delivery to LALCs, including arranging scheduling with LALCs, travel arrangements, venue bookings and other administrative tasks.
  • Reviewed and analyzed trends in service data, including enquiries, types of services delivered, areas of law and locations of LALCs to draw conclusions about ways in which improvements could be made to services to support LALCs.
