If we do our job well, we genuinely add to the prosperity of our country and its people.
We are seeking candidates who are highly qualified and exceptional in their technical capabilities and strategic thinking. This is a rare opportunity to join a high-impact team in a role that is both challenging and rewarding.
The AMP Tax team are seeking a technically exceptional and commercially astute Senior Tax Manager (Counsel) Advice, Assurance and Policy to lead strategic tax advisory, assurance and policy development across the enterprise.
This senior-level role is responsible for providing expert tax advice on business initiatives, investments, structuring, corporate transactions and regulatory change. In this role you will partner with business units early in planning to integrate tax considerations into strategic decisions.
As AMP’s in-house authority on complex tax matters, you will guide business decisions to optimise tax outcomes while ensuring full compliance with Australian and international tax laws. You’ll work closely with senior leaders across Finance, Legal, Treasury, Enterprise Risk Management and business units to align tax strategy with commercial objectives, maintain rigorous compliance standards and uphold AMP’s tax governance framework.
How will you make an impact
- Provide strategic tax advice on transactions, restructures and business initiatives
- Partner with business units to embed tax considerations into strategic planning and decision-making
- Monitor and interpret changes in Australian and international tax legislation and advising senior management on implications and required actions
- Communicate complex tax matters clearly to non-tax stakeholders across Finance, Legal, Treasury, and other teams.
- Oversee tax compliance in collaboration with the Compliance & Reporting team, including technical reviews and support for filings.
- Identify and mitigate tax risks, strengthen controls and lead assurance reviews of key tax processes
- Represent AMP in engagements with auditors and tax authorities, including participation in the ATO’s Top 1000 assurance program
- Provide regular reporting to the Board on tax risks, compliance and legislative updates.
- Lead the development and maintenance of AMP’s tax policies and guidelines, including the Tax Risk Management Policy, transfer pricing, intra-group transactions and global tax reporting (e.g. OECD BEPS Pillar 2)
- Translate complex legislation into practical compliance actions and ensure alignment with AMP’s business strategy and risk appetite
- Engage with industry bodies and external stakeholders on tax policy matters and stay abreast of emerging trends.
What you will bring to the role
- A postgraduate qualification in taxation, such as a Master of Taxation or Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA), is strongly preferred. Equivalent qualifications, such as CPA/CA or a law degree with a tax specialisation, will also be considered
- Membership in relevant professional bodies (e.g. The Tax Institute, CA ANZ, CPA Australia or a legal Bar association) is expected
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in senior tax advisory or management roles is required, ideally with exposure to international tax matters as well as outstanding track record in shaping tax strategy, managing compliance and engaging with Boards and senior stakeholders
- Proven expertise in tax advisory is essential, with demonstrated success in delivering practical, risk-managed solutions to complex tax issues
- A solid background in tax compliance and risk management is important, including experience overseeing reporting obligations, enhancing control frameworks or participating in tax risk reviews
- Experience in the financial services industry, particularly in superannuation, investments, or banking, is highly desirable due to the sector’s regulatory complexity
- Exceptional technical knowledge of Australian corporate tax and international tax principles (e.g. transfer pricing, cross-border transactions) is essential, along with the ability to apply this expertise to complex business scenarios
- A clear understanding of corporate governance and risk management as it relates to tax is required
- Confident in documenting tax positions, preparing policy papers and advising governance committees on tax risk.
You are a Senior Tax Manager (Counsel), with deep expertise in Australian corporate tax. You apply sound judgment in interpreting complex legislation and translating it into strategic, high-value business decisions.
A commercially minded strategist, you bring exceptional analytical skills and the ability to distil complexity into clear, actionable insights. Experience using advanced technologies, such as AI, to enhance tax governance and decision-making is highly regarded.
You are a confident communicator, able to engage credibly with senior executives, Boards, regulators and external advisors, and influence outcomes at the highest levels. As a collaborative leader, you drive cross-functional initiatives and foster exceptional relationships across the enterprise.
Above all, you demonstrate unwavering integrity, a deep understanding of governance and risk management and the agility to navigate complex, fast-evolving tax environments. Your proactive, solutions-oriented mindset and commitment to upholding AMP’s reputation with stakeholders and regulators will be key to your success.
