About the opportunity


NSW Health Pathology, is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Technical Officer to join our team on a permanent full-time basis at the Forensic Analytical Science Service. In this vital role, you’ll contribute to the delivery of critical forensic services by performing a range of laboratory tests, sample processing tasks, and technical analysis within a highly specialised scientific unit. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include the examination, recovery, and preparation of forensic samples, alongside the meticulous management of completed forensic exhibits—ensuring they are tracked, returned to stakeholders, or lawfully destroyed in line with policy, regulatory and legislative requirements.

FASS specialises in providing independent and objective forensic analysis to the criminal and coronial justice systems, as well as quality scientific analysis that contributes to community health and safety. Our services include illicit drug analysis, forensic and drug toxicology, chemical criminalistics, forensic biology and DNA, forensic medicine, environmental toxicology, and environmental microbiology. What you'll be doing


To perform a range of laboratory tests and technical tasks, including organisation and management of completed exhibits, both independently and as directed, by applying established methods and procedures to contribute to the efficient operation of the Unit, and consequently to the creation of better health and justice systems in NSW.

  • Minimum Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification relevant to analytical or forensic science to which the role applies.
  • Demonstrated understanding and practical knowledge of relevant technical laboratory skills and instrumentation.
  • Sound computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office applications and ability to use information management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to individually contribute in a team environment to deliver outcomes within specified timeframes.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with clients as well as other staff.
  • Capability to display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to follow procedures when investigating general issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in exhibit management.
  • Demonstrated capacity to adopt and model the NSWHP RITE values of Respect, Integrity, Teamwork and Excellence.
