POSITION PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE
To deliver the suite of Resource Recovery and Waste Avoidance workshops and develop
parts/components of a workshop.
To participate in other opportunities to implement waste avoidance education,
communication and strategies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Deliver waste avoidance workshops to community participants at various locations,
including preparing and packing up venue.
Deliver information on best practice waste management including, but not limited to,
composting, worm farming, Council services, reusable products, food waste reduction.

Undertake and record risk management assessment of venues prior to delivering
workshops.
Periodically contribute to evaluation of workshops, including the content.
Assist in implementing education strategies and programs, including research and
administrative assistance.
Participate in other waste & resource programs and provide waste reduction education to
community groups and schools.
Participate in other opportunities to implement education programs.
Promote community awareness, support, and behavior in achieving Towards Zero Waste
& Community Towards Net Zero Strategy objectives.
Contribute to help Council deliver its sustainability and waste goals.
Ensure equity and workplace health and safety principles and practices are implemented
in all aspects of the position’s responsibilities – including course participants.
Monitor and report on workshop attendees and expenses.
Participate in occasional planning, training and/or team meetings.

COMMUNICATION
The position will communicate primarily with community members/groups participating in the
course through presenting to a group. It will need to communicate information about Council
services and philosophy. The position will need to use a number of methods of
communication including lecture, facilitating group discussion and practical demonstrations.
JUDGEMENT & PROBLEM SOLVING
Some limited judgement and problem solving on the course content, however, will need to

make decisions on the best way to deliver the course to a particular group. The position will
need to be able to appropriately respond to participants’ questions and comments, which may
require assessment of a range of options and research.
AUTHORITY
Limited authority. The position provides a specialised service to deliver training to members
of the community. The course content has elements of complexity. The trainer represents
Council when delivering the training and responding to participants’ questions.
SKILL, EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES
ESSENTIAL
Experience in communicating to groups of all kinds.
Experience in developing, delivering and evaluating community education programs
Knowledge and understanding of relevant waste management and environmental
legislation or capacity to gain such knowledge or ability to learn.
Knowledge, understanding and experience in a range of good waste management
practices such as avoidance, reuse, recycling, composting, worm farming, and reduction
of single-use items.
Proven interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated computing skills in a variety of software applications.
Commitment to, and knowledge of, Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S) and Equal
Employment Opportunity (EEO) principles and practice.
Class C drivers licence.
Willing to undergo a ‘Working with Children’ check.
DESIRABLE
Experience representing local government in public situations.
Formal education or waste management/environmental management qualifications.
Knowledge of the Blue Mountains area including its community profile and physical and
biological environments
‘Train the Trainer’ qualification or similar.
