The Role
We’re looking for a motivated and collaborative Business Development Manager to join our Brisbane office, as part of McCullough Robertson’s national Business Development and Marketing team. The team works with a strong culture of setting each other up for success.
Reporting to the Head of Business Development and Marketing, this role will support our Corporate and Digital and Intellectual Property teams, along with the Technology, Media and Telecommunications Industry Group. You’ll be responsible for developing and executing BD strategies that strengthen client relationships, identifying and pursuing new opportunities in strategic areas, and contributing to major initiatives as we approach our centenary in 2026, and beyond.
Your key responsibilities include:
- Working closely with partners and teams to continuously evolve and execute their strategic BDM plans, assessing these plans on a regular basis, and reporting to senior leadership on their progression;
- Formulating client relationship strategies, including participating in client listening initiatives and ensuring the delivery of client commitments;
- Contributing to the firm’s strategy, including supporting various projects and events in preparation for the firm’s centenary in 2026, and working on firm and BDM team projects that drive process improvements, solve problems, and enable us to continue expanding our support of the firm in new and exciting ways;
- Collaborating with the broader BDM team to identify opportunities for collaboration to promote the firm’s expertise and approach to clients, referrers, industries and regions;
- With support from BDM Coordinators, leading the project management and preparation of tender responses, credentials, and directory submissions, as well as events relevant to your portfolio;
- Proactively building and maintaining effective working relationships with partners, managers, staff, clients, external service providers, and industry associations relevant to your designated teams;
- Supporting individual lawyers and teams to strengthen their business development skills and to prepare and execute personal business development plans that align with the firm’s strategic priorities and team goals;
- Preparing and managing budgets for your designated teams; and
- Managing and coaching BDM team members towards their career goals.
Experience
The ideal candidate will hold tertiary qualifications in business, marketing or a related field. This role would suit a senior Business Development Executive (3-5 years) ready to take the next step, or a Business Development Manager looking for an opportunity to develop new skills and gain further experience.
A background in professional services is essential, along with demonstrated experience leading a portfolio of practice or industry groups. Furthermore, you will demonstrate the following key attributes:
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to build rapport, and develop effective working relationships with stakeholders at all levels;
- Outstanding written, communication, and presentation skills, including the ability to deliver strategic key messaging in a consistent and simple way;
- Excellent attention to detail;
- A proven ability to effectively manage priorities, projects and deadlines, and communicate accordingly with relevant stakeholders;
- A hands-on approach, and willingness to support the team during peak periods while contributing to a cohesive team environment;
- A passion for continuous learning, including supporting the development of BDM Coordinators and Administrators; and
- Adaptability and flexibility in meeting the firm’s evolving needs.
