About the opportunity

The School of Social and Political Sciences is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow Multispecies Justice under the supervision of Professor Danielle Celermajer . The position and the project will be associated with the Sydney Environment Institute.

This project focuses on how to include the interests of the environment and other animals (the more-than-human, MtH) in democratic and deliberative decision-making processes in relation to environmental, biodiversity and climate policies. This project will provide the first comparative empirical data on, and analysis of democratic reforms that expand representation beyond the human.

This project involves developing experiments in more-than-human inclusion is two different contexts. The first concerns local adaptation planning, engaging with regional government processes in Australia. The second will involve a climate or biodiversity deliberative assembly based in Europe.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • document and analyse existing models of MtHR and what is known about their effects
  • evaluate different models’ impacts, identify barriers and opportunities
  • collaborate with community and government stakeholders to develop the experiments in more-than-human inclusion in decision making
  • conduct evaluation of the experiments
  • write reports, handbooks and academic articles
  • contribute expertise and knowledge through communication with civil society, government, forums of public debate, organisation of public events, seminars, and conferences.

About you

  • PhD in social sciences or humanities, including political sciences, philosophy or anthropology
  • expertise in more-than-human or multispecies justice
  • proven experience conducting original research, with a developing research profile in your discipline
  • demonstrated ability to adapt or develop high equality evaluation instruments
  • skills in qualitative research methods and ability to lead research involving interviews and focus groups
  • demonstrated project management skills and a proven ability to prioritise workload, work consistently within a results-driven environment, and meet deadlines
  • effective management of a diverse group of key stakeholders on large or complex projects and the ability to develop/cultivate productive relationships with civil society and government providers.
