What you’ll deliver with us
The Technical Lead will provide expert leadership and hands-on development guidance within a cross-functional Agile team responsible for delivering backend services and platforms in a cloud-native environment. This role is critical to the design, build, and continuous delivery of secure, scalable, and reliable digital services that underpin Australia Post’s Retail Point of Sale platform.
Working within a Kanban-based DevOps team, the Technical Lead will ensure best practices in backend development, infrastructure automation, and serverless cloud architecture. The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced knowledge of the AWS ecosystem, strong leadership in agile technical delivery, and a deep commitment to quality, performance, and maintainability.
We're empowered to deliver for our teams and to delight our customers. We provide an inclusive and supportive environment that nurtures talented people, trusts our teams to deliver their best, and leverages modern work practices and technologies. It's an unexpectedly dynamic and collaborative culture that feels more like a start-up than a 213-year old icon.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead technical design and delivery of modern backend solutions using AWS serverless services, ensuring security, scalability, and sustainability
- Provide day-to-day leadership and mentoring to a multidisciplinary DevOps team
- Drive continuous integration and delivery practices, ensuring frequent, reliable releases
- Drive adoption of automated testing, infrastructure as code, and continuous integration and deployment practices
- Ensure high code quality and coverage through automated tests, performance monitoring, and code reviews
- Collaborate with stakeholders, architects, and product managers to translate requirements into sound technical outcomes
- Contribute to architectural decisions, ensuring alignment with agency cloud strategies and digital service standards
- Ensure services are monitored, observable, cost-effective, and meet performance and compliance benchmarks
- Maintain strong documentation and support knowledge transfer across the team
- Champion technical excellence and continuous improvement across the delivery lifecycle
- Guide the team in troubleshooting, performance tuning, and incident response
- Provide technical coaching and mentoring to support growth of developers within the team
Essential Requirements:
- Extensive experience in backend software engineering with a focus on AWS cloud services, particularly serverless components such as Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, and Step Functions
- Proven ability to provide technical leadership to Agile teams, preferably in Kanban or similar continuous flow models
- Strong proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform)
- Practical experience implementing and maintaining automated testing frameworks and practices (unit, integration, performance)
- Demonstrated understanding of DevOps practices, including CI/CD, observability, and operational support
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desirable Qualifications and Experience:
- AWS certification (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional, DevOps Engineer – Professional)
- Familiarity with event-driven architecture, microservices, or DDD principles
- Awareness of cloud cost management and optimisation practices
Work Environment and Culture:
You will join a high-performing team within a progressive and supportive environment focused on continuous delivery, collaboration, and service excellence. We value diversity, flexibility, and a shared commitment to improving digital outcomes for all Australians.
