Safety Specialist – 9 Month Maternity Leave Contract
Wallenius Wilhelmsen is currently seeking a Safety Specialist with relevant experience to join our team on a 9-month maternity leave contract at our Laverton site and would require travelling interstate. This role requires full-time, on-site presence, five days a week.
Reporting to the Safety, Quality & Sustainability Manager – Oceania, this mid-level position plays a vital role in ensuring safety remains a core focus across our operations. You will provide strategic guidance and a strong safety framework to support key stakeholders both locally and globally.
You will be part of a supportive and professional Safety, Quality & Sustainability (SQS) team that operates across multiple Melbourne sites, including our Equipment Processing Centers in Laverton North. The team also partners with other locations in Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, and New Zealand, offering a dynamic and collaborative work environment.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and execute health and safety plans in line with company policies and legal requirements.
Prepare and implement policies that promote a strong safety culture across all levels of the organisation.
Evaluate workplace practices, procedures, and facilities to identify risks and ensure compliance.
Deliver engaging training sessions and presentations on health, safety, and accident prevention.
Conduct audits and inspections to monitor compliance and identify areas for improvement.
Regularly inspect equipment and machinery, addressing any unsafe conditions promptly.
Investigate incidents to determine root causes and support the management of workers’ compensation claims.
Recommend practical solutions and preventative measures to enhance workplace safety.
Maintain accurate records and report on safety performance, trends, and key metrics.
Support the Manager – Safety, Quality & Sustainability with additional tasks as required
Mandatory Skills and Experience
Knowledge of ISO 45001 WHS Management system and ISO 31000 Risk Management
Experience from shipping, logistics or maritime – or similar industry
Qualification in Occupational Health & safety, or similar, such as Certificate IV in Workplace Safety
Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and best practices
Excellent communication and training delivery skills
A proactive mindset with strong problem-solving abilities
Valid Driver’s License.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environment management systems and ISO 9001 Quality management systems
Cert IV Training & Assessment
Preferred experience in a blue-collar & union environment
Demonstrated background in developing documentation, policies, procedures, Sop’s & training material.
