Primary objective
Manage the provision of support and assistance to witnesses, victims of crime and their families during their involvement with the criminal
justice system.
Context statement
The position is based in Darwin and is required to assist in coordinating the Crown and Summary workloads within the unit and attend as
required the Local and Supreme Courts in Darwin, and remote circuit courts in the Northern region to provide support to victims,
witnesses, and their families. The position works closely with prosecutors and other agencies to ensure the best outcomes for victims and
witnesses during the court process. The position is required to travel to remote communities with overnight stays.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide a high level of advice, support, information and assistance to victims, witnesses and their families throughout their experience
of the court system.
2. Provide coordination and management assistance to the Darwin unit of the Witness Assistance Service, including providing training
and informal supervision of staff.
3. Provide high quality advice to senior management on the provision of witness assistance services in the Darwin Region.
4. Develop and maintain effective communication links and networks with key stakeholders.
5. Develop and implement effective strategies for the monitoring of case progress to ensure effective case management.
6. Promote Witness Assistance Services in the Darwin region through promotional displays and community education programs.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Sound knowledge of the criminal justice system together with high-level skills appropriate to the provision of advice, support,
information and assistance to victims, witnesses and their families.
2. Experience in the training, supervision and leadership of staff with the capacity to manage change.
3. Ability to provide high quality advice to senior management on the provision of witness assistance services.
4. Proven ability to work and communicate effectively in a cross-cultural environment and a demonstrated understanding of the issues
that affect Aboriginal victims, witnesses and their families.
5. Proven ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with team members and internal and external stakeholders.
6. Well-developed organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure, make sound judgements, work independently and
prioritise workloads in a busy environment.
7. Hold (or have the capacity to obtain) a current NT driver's licence, and willingness to travel to remote locations by light aircraft/4WD.
Desirable
1. Experience working in the NT criminal justice system.
2. Bachelor qualification in social work, social science or law.
