Primary objective
To promote Aboriginal culture and cultural security of Aboriginal clients admitted to the Top End Mental Health Service Inpatient
Unit, and advice staff on approaches appropriate to addressing mental health problems and illnesses from an Aboriginal cultural
perspective.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide clinical consultation to staff appointed to the Inpatient Unit Team, and act as a cultural advocate in ensuring access to
services.
2. Provide cultural insights awareness, and language skills to improve understanding and communication between clinicians and
Aboriginal people.
3. Contribute towards and participate in the establishment of standards and protocols for effective mental health service delivery
to Indigenous females.
4. Plan and carry out development strategies for changing attitudes and improving knowledge and skills to deal with family and
mental health issues by promoting the participation of Aboriginal people in the planning and development of mental health
services for Aboriginal people.
5. Participate in training for community-based workers ensuring a greater awareness of mental health issues.
6. Maintain appropriate documentation of cultural issues pertaining to clients in case notes and Community Care Information
System.
7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services, and workplace.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Knowledgeable in Aboriginal ways and local terms of reference and issues and the ability to represent Aboriginal interests at
meetings and other forums of consultation and discussion.
2. Demonstrate a good standard of oral and written English.
3. Sound knowledge of mental health and mental illness and an ability to maintain confidentiality.
4. Proven skills in the effective use of information technology records and systems maintenance for the effective delivery of client
services.
5. An ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.
Desirable
1. Understanding of one or more Aboriginal languages.
2. Qualifications as an Aboriginal Mental Health Worker or involved in study relevant to the position.
3. Possessing the right to exercise authority and influence according to cultural requirements and terms of reference.
4. Hold current NT drivers licence or have the ability to obtain.
