Aboriginal Youth Cautioning Support Officer

Victoria Police is committed to reducing the number of Aboriginal children in the criminal justice system. As part of this commitment, Victoria Police has introduced an enhanced cautioning model developed in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal community to achieve better outcomes for Aboriginal children aged 10-17 in contact with police. This program is known as the Aboriginal Youth Cautioning Program (AYCP).

Five Aboriginal Youth Cautioning Support Officer (AYCSO) roles have been established to support the effective operation and ongoing expansion of the AYCP in locations throughout Victoria. The advertised position (20045941) will support the Eastern Region and will involve working collaboratively with local police and the Victorian Aboriginal community to identify opportunities to further enhance the program and adapt its operation to suit localised needs.

Your duties will include:

  • Liaising with local police and the Aboriginal community on matters relating to the AYCP
  • Monitoring the operation of the AYCP in locations throughout the relevant region
  • Preparing reports addressing outcomes of the AYCP in local areas
  • Providing advice to regional management on emerging issues or opportunities to improve justice outcomes for Aboriginal communities
  • Presenting at meetings or forums, as required.

About You:

The successful candidate will ideally have the following skills and experience:

  • A desire to improve justice outcomes for Aboriginal children
  • The proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as required
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness of the Victorian Aboriginal community
  • Demonstrated experience in program delivery and monitoring.

Further Information:

  • One (1) x full-time VPSG-5, fixed term position (expiring 30 June 2028).
  • Position is located at Eastern Region, Knox Police Complex, 420 Burwood Hwy, Wantirna South. However, consideration will be given to allowing the successful applicant to work from divisional headquarters located in Shepparton, Wangaratta, Morwell or Bairnsdale.
    • The role may require occasional travel to various parts of Eastern Region to undertake stakeholder engagement and liaise with police personnel.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • For this role you will be required to apply and pay for a Working with Children Check prior to receiving a job offer. A receipt of payment is required as evidence of this.
