Emergency Medicine - Mid North Coast Local Health District
Tired of big cities? Want to start your day sitting on your deck in the sun, enjoying a cup of coffee and listening to the birds? Or would you rather have a surf or a walk along the beach before work? It’s an opportunity to recharge your batteries and prioritise your wellbeing. Every day feels like a vacation!
Port Macquarie is a coastal city located on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales, just an hour flight or 4 hour drive north of Sydney. It is renowned for its natural beauty, stunning beaches and abundance of wildlife. Sitting at the mouth of the Hastings River, it’s a natural paradise where dolphins frolic, whales linger during their migration and koalas doze in the branches overhead. It is a favoured destination due to its idyllic, temperate climate and its laid-back vibe. Yet it also has a vibrant town centre with a sophisticated dining scene and a large theatre. This place makes you feel relaxed and energised.

With a population of over 50,000 in the urban area it is one of the fastest growing places in New South Wales. Port Macquarie Base Hospital is a 228 bed level five facility with a 24-hour Emergency Department and a range of specialist services, including intensive care, anaesthetics, cardiology, stroke, respiratory, paediatrics, obstetrics, general medicine, orthopaedics, urology, vascular, general surgery, gastroenterology, oncology, ophthalmology and mental health. This rural hospital has seen a huge growth in presentations over the last couple of years and currently sees approx 50,000 presentations per year, of which 20% paediatrics, and has its own fast track area and 8 bed short stay unit. The Base Hospital is the main referral centre for the Mid-North coast and is also the regions trauma centre, with 276 trauma presentations in 2024 alone. It is also affiliated with the University of New South Wales rural clinical medical school, which is located on the hospital campus.
Kempsey District Hospital is a smaller rural hospital 45 minutes away with limited on-site resources. It sees nearly 30,000 presentations per year (25% paediatrics and 24% indigenous), with some patients being transferred to Port Macquarie Base Hospital for specialty inpatient care. We see both Emergency Departments as a network and share the staff and resources, but most importantly we strive to deliver a high level of consultant-led care regardless of the location.
Come and join our team in the Emergency Departments of Port Macquarie and Kempsey in a fun, stimulating and challenging work environment. There are daily opportunities for procedural skills improvement with 30 supportive Emergency Specialists (FACEMs), who are committed to your development and wellbeing.
