Primary objective
As a senior member of the school’s leadership team, the Assistant Principal plays a key role in the leadership, development
and delivery of programs to the Acacia Hill School community to achieve optimal educational outcomes for students,
including providing leadership and driving curriculum and pedagogy.
Context statement
Acacia Hill School, located in Alice Springs, is the only special school in Central Australia, and has an enrolment of
approximately 105 students ranging from Preschool to Year 12. Over 90% of students need support with communication.
The school’s highly specialised learning and wellbeing programs cater for students with intellectual disability or multiple
complex disabilities using the Early Years Learning Framework and the developmental-based Victorian Curriculum, which
directly articulates with the Australian Curriculum. The school is committed to fostering learning without limits for every
student.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. In collaboration with the Principal, provide leadership in the development and implementation of curriculum to deliver
effective personalised educational programs to meet the needs of students.
2. Provide leadership and coaching across the teaching cohort with the school’s curriculum, pedagogy, behaviour and
wellbeing programs.
3. Enact and foster partnerships with families, the community, agencies and professional networks to achieve educational
outcomes for students in line with the school strategic plan.
4. Contribute to the planning and delivery of professional learning and advice to staff and professional networks which
grows the knowledge and skills of quality staff.
5. Undertake appropriate teaching duties and deputise for the Principal when required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven ability to lead and work collaboratively with the school community to achieve high quality educational outcomes
for students with complex and diverse disabilities.
2. Demonstrated comprehensive and practical knowledge of the Early Years Learning Framework, Australian Curriculum
and Towards Foundation Victorian Curriculum F-10, contemporary pedagogical practices and behaviour management
strategies, particularly those relevant to special education.
3. High level of interpersonal, written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-
disciplinary team with staff, students and parents from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
4. Experience in resource administration and staff management as a member of a leadership team.
