The role of a Disability Support Worker is to support National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants who are deaf or hard of hearing with or without additional disabilities. You will be required to appropriately support our clients with opportunities to reach their individual goals while building up independent living skills. You may work individually with clients and/or coherently with their families. Support may be delivered in the community or in the home.
About Signpedia
Signpedia is a Deaf owned organisation that provides services to Deaf, hard of hearing, nonverbal clients, Auslan users and their families, who have funding through the NDIS. We currently provide services nation-wide.
What are we looking for:
Social Support: You may be required to provide support for social and recreational activities, either in the home or while accessing the community, to attend social groups, visit friends/family, active hobbies such as bike riding, going places for fun, playing sport and attend classes etc, to help with development of basic literacy, budgeting, interaction, and communication.
Objective: To support people with a disability to achieve independence, social and economic participation. Help with health and wellbeing, to meet new people to learn and improve social skills
Daily Life Support: You may be required to assist with everyday needs including, but not limited to, domestic duties in the home such as meal preparation, household cleaning, cooking, dressing etc. As well as support to go shopping & attend personal appointments, to assist with their regular tasks and chores.
Objective: To assist people with a disability to complete their everyday personal activities and build their independent living skills at home and in the community. •
Personal Care Support: You may be required to assist with daily personal activities including, but not limited to, personal hygiene (bathing, grooming, oral hygiene), eating and drinking, help with use of aids and appliances such as hearing and communication devices and mobility aids, mobility and transferring.
Objective: To assist people with a disability with their functional skills.
Transport: You may be required to provide transport support for clients to access community and social activities, attend medical appointments, attend social outings, attend events and shopping.
Consent: To use your own personal vehicle to transport clients.
Medication: you may be required to monitor clients taking their medication or administer medication if requested by your supervisor/national manager.
- Support clients work on and achieve their goals by responding to their individual needs to increase independence and confidence.
- Promote and encouraging independence by enhancing and developing their skills.
- Participate in organising meaningful daily activities for the client.
- Provide quality & competent support in a safe manner with care and skill.
- Respect client’s choice and control, privacy, and decision-making.
- Complete all Case Notes, reports and documentation in timesheets and as required.
- Observe and report changes in client’s health, behaviour, needs or circumstances in your case notes/incident reports and alerting Signpedia support coordinators and supervisor.
- Ensure a positive public image and represent Signpedia throughout the community.
- Manage finances and petty cash as required.
- Undertake other duties and functions as directed, commensurate with current level of skills and classification.
Selection Criteria:
- Fluency in Auslan.
- Minimum Certificate III in Disability Services or similar and/or equivalent knowledge and experience in providing quality community services for people with disabilities.
- Good written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to different methods of communication style to suit clients’ needs.
- Demonstrated skills in researching information and developing effective and innovative support options.
- Computer literacy skills.
- Able to be open-minded, flexible and explore creative ways to meet clients’ individual support needs and difficulties.
- Demonstrated networking skills and ability to develop networks within the disability industry.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others and alone with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to empathise with people with a disability and their families/carers.
- High standards of ethical and professional behaviour.
Additional Requirements:
- Current and valid NDIS Workers Screening Check (Mandatory)
- Current and valid Working with Children Check (for incidental contact with children).
- Current and valid Driver’s License would be an advantage.
- Comprehensive car insurance to transport clients.
- Comply with any additional State related screenings as required by NDIS.
