The DevOps Engineer is responsible for collaborating with Software Engineers in the design, implementation and support of DevOps capabilities for the API platforms with some work in the digital space. They will be instrumental in developing automated and integrated capabilities for monitoring and keeping currency of the capabilities run in the platforms.
The DevOps Engineer will also be an AWS platform subject matter expert within the Rest Engineering team. They will be embedded in all AWS platform related projects to design, implement and support cloud architecture needed to deliver engineering capabilities.
- Develop and standardise the usage of automation to provision and manage cloud resources and environments within the Digital (CMS) and API Platforms, using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, scripting, or other tools.
- Review our current CI/CD pipelines to automate the deployment and updates to AWS resources, and define and implement best practices in our CI/CD pipelines.
- Analyse monitoring data to identify performance bottlenecks in the Platforms.
- Work alongside Solution Architects and other technical stakeholders to design and architect scalable, reliable, and secure cloud solutions, using native AWS services (S3, ECS, EC2, RDS, Dynamo, etc.).
- Review and enforce practices from our vendor DevOps resources to develop infrastructure as code using tools like AWS CloudFormation or CDK to automate resource provisioning.
- Own the BCP and DR capabilities within the AWS domain and work collaboratively with the business and vendors to schedule and conduct annual DR tests for all AWS based infrastructure.
- Investigate and resolve technical issues related to AWS infrastructure, networking, and applications. Provide technical support to development teams and stakeholders, troubleshooting and resolving issues promptly.
- Integrate security controls into the CI/CD pipeline to safeguard the software development process. This could involve implementing Static Application Security Testing (SAST), Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST), or other security tools within the pipeline.
- Set up proactive monitoring and alerting systems to detect anomalies, performance degradation, and potential failures. Implement timely alerts to notify teams about issues requiring attention.
- Implement and manage redundant systems, load balancers, and failover mechanisms to ensure continuous availability. Monitor the health of redundant components and automatically switch traffic to healthy resources.
- Document all changes made to the CI/CD pipeline, ensuring other team members can understand and follow the new processes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, operations, and security teams, to drive successful cloud initiatives.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field; or a proven track record of relevant industry experience.
- Cloud-specific certifications are highly valuable (AWS Solution Architect, Developer, SysOps, etc.).
Required experience, understanding or credentials including:
- Junior to mid-level of relevant experience in cloud architecture, cloud operations, DevOps or related roles is required.
- Strong record of delivering observable cloud solutions from inception to production, working hands-on throughout the process; A strong and in-depth understanding of cloud, CI/CD practices, and modern development practices.
- AWS Services - including RDS, DMS, DynamoDB, EC2, SQS, SNS, CloudWatch, Lambda functions and IAM to name a few; Cloud networking such as VPC, NACL, Security Group, Firewalls, LBs, Transit Gateway, VPC, VPN.
- Development of Infrastructure As Code frameworks and automation such as Terraform, AWS CDK, Cloud Formation, Ansible.
- Application deployment and release management
- Source-code repositories and CI/CD pipelines such as Gitlab, Github, GitHub Actions.
- Application configuration and secrets management.
- Application deployment patterns - web applications, serverless, containers.
- Languages - Python, Typescript / Javascript, Shell.
- Designing and managing resilient and recoverable cloud infrastructure with 3+ nines availability.
- Experience in observability for infrastructure, applications, and cloud services with tools such as Dynatrace, Datadog, PagerDuty, etc.
- Tools - Atlassian Jira, Confluence, Github.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Knowledgeable in multiple programming languages and an expert in some
- Understanding of the cloud infrastructure level - VPCs, networks, security, Linux
- Passionate about quality and correctness with a drive to automate as much as possible
- Experience with development or the administration of Kubernetes or Serverless frameworks
