Your Opportunity
In a peaceful area based in Mareeba (Cairns), Shanty Creek is our Indigenous alcohol and drug residential treatment and recovery program. It provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women, aged 18 years and over, who are experiencing alcohol or other drugs dependency or misuse and mental health concerns. The program is dedicated to acceptance, compassion, respect and trust. It is an environment where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women can find solutions to their drug and alcohol problems. Shanty Creek provides a safe and supportive environment, to assist clients in reaching their goals and reduce the harm of drugs or alcohol.
This is a 0.5 FTE (19 Hours per week) position with flexibility around days and hours of work, on a consistent schedule. Salary for this position is $33.00 - $36.00 per hour plus Superannuation and Salary Packaging to increase your take-home pay. This is a contract position up until 30 June 2026.
What we are looking for
As an experienced Grounds or Maintenance person, you will be able to provide general handyman skills including gardening, cleaning and light carpentry duties. You will be comfortable working on a large residential site and have a compassionate and engaging nature.
You’ll also bring:
- A background in landscaping, maintenance, and groundskeeping including mowing, weeding, spraying general garden upkeep
- Competence in maintaining gardening equipment and machinery and use of basic power tools
- An understanding of, and compliance with, occupational health and safety requirements
- A friendly, flexible and non-judgemental attitude – including working within professional boundaries
- Good emotional regulation skills, with an understanding of de-escalation practices
- Excellent communication skills and ability to relate to a wide range of people
- Understanding for the need to maintain confidentiality of clients – both at work and after hours
- Supervisory skills – you’ll be mentoring and supporting clients to develop skills in this area
A relevant qualification would be highly desirable, but relevant experience and a great attitude are what’s most important to us. You will need to have a current, valid Australian Drivers Licence and a National Police Check.
