About the role
The School of Human Services currently runs undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the fields of Art Therapy, Counselling and Psychotherapy, Community Services and Social Work.
The Head of School is responsible for the academic leadership and delivery of courses within a discipline, while supporting the achievement of Ikon’s vision, goals, and objectives. They ensure academic integrity, learning and teaching design and quality, student engagement, and the academic progression of students.
This role will also focus on academic management, team leadership and industry engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Delivery & Quality
- Manage course operations and delivery, including the Learning Management System (LMS) and all associated resources.
- Provide and support high-quality teaching, setting a standard for the academic team.
- Lead the development of industry-relevant strategies to promote student employability.
- Oversee continuous improvement processes, including course reviews, moderation, and benchmarking to maintain quality and currency.
Academic & People Management
- Lead and manage a high-performing academic team, including recruiting, developing, mentoring, and coaching staff.
- Monitor student achievement, identifying and supporting at-risk students with a focus on retention and completion.
- Ensure all academic operations and staff comply with regulatory frameworks and organizational policies.
- Provide data and analysis to leadership, and facilitate meetings to ensure high-quality communication and work processes.

Course Development & Industry Engagement
- Chair Course Advisory Committees for the development and review of courses.
- Engage with industry and professional bodies to ensure courses remain relevant and current.
- Develop and maintain relationships with external partners for practicums and work placements.
- Promote Ikon through professional networks.
Education, Experience & Skill:
- A PhD in a discipline or field currently being taught in the School;
- Experience in management, and leading change and innovation within a higher education environment;
- Knowledge of contemporary developments in the discipline or field, informed by continuing scholarship and/or practice;
- Current or recent practicing experience within the discipline or field preferred;
- Skills in contemporary teaching, learning and assessment principles specific to the discipline or field;
- Experience in developing, leading, and managing high performance teams;
- Experience in course development and accreditation and development of course curriculum;
- Demonstrated understanding of requirements associated with regulatory frameworks, especially the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021.
