The Opportunity
This is a rare opportunity for an inspiring and strategic leader to shape the future of the newly formed School of Humanities and Social Sciences and contribute meaningfully to the University’s mission of excellence, impact, and sustainability. As part of the Arts and Society leadership team, the Head of School will foster a collaborative and collegial culture for their School, across the University and with external partners in government, industry, and the community. The School plays a pivotal role in advancing critical thought, creativity, and ethical practice - core to a thriving society. Through innovative teaching, impactful research, and active community engagement, you will drive cultural and social change that improves lives in Tasmania and beyond.
What’s Required
Assuming the responsibility to make decisions and effectively lead, motivate and inspire people to take action you will bring vision, deep management expertise and a commitment to the transformative power of the humanities and social sciences. In addition, you will demonstrate:
- Academic qualifications and experience commensurate with the senior academic level in one of the disciplines offered by the School.
- Academic leadership experience, with a strong record of achievement in teaching, research, and engagement within a University.
- Strong understanding of curriculum design, teaching quality assurance, and student experience enhancement, including the ability for innovative leadership in the design and delivery of a compelling, high-quality and sustainable Bachelor of Arts
- Experience in research leadership, including fostering collaboration, maintaining research quality and integrity, and securing partnerships and external funding.
- Sound financial and resource management capabilities, including budget development, forecasting, and efficient deployment of people and assets.
- Strong understanding of governance, compliance, and regulatory frameworks relevant to higher education, research, and risk management.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strategic partnerships with industry, government, and community stakeholders to enhance the School’s profile and impact.
About the Portfolio
The newly formed School of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of five academic units under Arts and Society, alongside the Conservatorium of Music, and the Schools of Creative and Performing Arts, Education, and Law. Together, our Arts and Society schools provide world-class research and teaching through undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with presence across three regions in lutruwita/Tasmania: South (Hobart), Northern (Launceston), and Cradle Coast (Burnie). Our graduates have made significant contributions to Tasmania's cultural and intellectual footprint, and the University is highly regarded locally, nationally, and internationally.
