About the Allied Health Research and Knowledge Translation Program

The Allied Health Research and Knowledge Translation program is a Department of Health funded initiative focusing on enhanced research, education, and leadership capacity for allied health professionals. The program is focused on improving the delivery of allied health services through generating and translating favourable research evidence to clinical practice. Aims/objectives of the program are:

  • to strengthen Victorian health services’ ability to engage effectively in the nexus between research and knowledge translation across the allied health professions,

  • to provide career development and opportunities for early career allied health researchers,

  • to build a network of emerging leaders in allied health research and knowledge translation with strong links across services and organisations,

  • to assist health services to efficiently translate research findings into program and practice change,

  • to assist health services to embed an organisational culture of enquiry and evidence,

  • to create broader research capacity within Victorian health services across all allied health workforces, by building research knowledge and skills and supporting research design, development, publication, and dissemination of findings,

  • to enhance the allied health research maturity of participating organisations,

  • to improve the evidence‐base for allied health clinical practice and service delivery,

  • to optimise and effectively utilise the value of allied health professionals to strategically pursue, inform and deliver improvement in areas of greatest need for innovation and change, and

  • to improve and enhance the quality of allied health care to drive quality and safety improvements.


Purpose

The purpose of this role is to increase the capability and capacity of Allied Health Sciences staff to undertake collaborative translational research, and to enhance the use of accumulated routine data and data linkage methods to undertake targeted research that will impact patient outcomes at Monash Health. A primary goal of the position is to maintain and strengthen a shared research platform with Monash University. Key deliverables include: the support, development and conduct of research projects that investigate emerging public health priorities within Radiology.

The position's aim is to develop collaborative research projects and capabilities/capacity within and across the medical imaging departments. The Allied Health Research and Knowledge Translation Lead will design, develop, and implement research, in addition to supporting the growth of research activity and skills for allied health professionals. The incumbent will receive support to develop their leadership capabilities, enabling them to create strong linkages between clinicians, researchers, and academics, and foster the next generation of allied health clinical researchers.

About Monash Imaging

Monash Health Imaging (MHI) provides diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology services to Monash Medical Centre Clayton, Moorabbin Hospital, Dandenong and Casey Hospitals, and Monash Children's Hospital. The MHI Department is fully integrated with Philips PACS/RIS and equipped with some of the latest medical imaging technology including eight MRI units, 13 CT units, more than 25 ultrasound units, six gamma cameras including three with SPECT CT, two PET/CTs, and three angiography suites for Interventional Radiology and Neurointerventional Radiology. MHI also supports the Monash Biomedical Imaging site, one of the Monash University platforms that provides capacity and capability for human MRI and PET MRI research.

Together with the Monash University Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, MHI is currently the largest research department in Australia as measured by research funding and number of publications. The MHI service provides over 365,000 imaging examinations per year across all sites and currently employs approximately 600 EFT.

The Imaging program clearly defines its mission as the delivery of leading edge, evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic imaging services, and research and education that meets the needs of our community and employees.


About You

To ensure success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge:

Research and Knowledge Translation

  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of research and evidence-based practice in profession-specific and related clinical areas

  • Demonstrated strong research skills in the conceptualisation, design and analysis of research projects using epidemiological principles and the use of and analysis of routine healthcare data

  • Evidenced development of new research ideas and ability to write protocols.

  • Evidence of ability to acquire grants for new projects, desirable.

  • Demonstrated strong skills in systemic review of healthcare literature to develop research protocols, compile evidence in support of application for funding or to maintain clinical and scientific currency of a particular topic

  • Promotes research via publication or presentation at internal and external forums and encourages others

  • Leader of or actively engagement in allied health research projects, including preparation of ethics documents, project proposals, data collection and analysis, report writing and dissemination of results

  • Contributed towards the development of research programs and strategy to increase the research capability within a team

  • Experience in coordinating a program of research training workshops/seminars (e.g. designing studies, searching literature, conducting research, publishing, grant writing, data management) – desirable.

  • Demonstrated participation, initiation, implementation and/or evaluation of research and engagement or encouragement of staff to engage in research and quality projects

  • Integrates consumers within the research design and development process

  • Experience maintaining an allied health research register to enable coordination of research projects and reporting of associated outputs (desirable)

Leadership

  • Provides visible leadership within an organisation

  • Articulates a vision for allied health translational research and develops appropriate business/action plans, in consultation with other senior allied health operational and research leaders

  • Establishes internal and external professional networks specific to allied health, research and or knowledge translation, and builds profile within these networks

  • Consults widely and shares relevant information with internal and external stakeholders

  • Provides research mentoring to less experienced allied health staff

  • Provide allied health representation on relevant committees

Communication and Engagement

  • Develops collaborative links with significant teaching organisations, universities and professional bodies to facilitate and promote research outputs

  • Liaises with organisational allied health and research leaders maintaining sound relationships with the health service

  • Ability to support the continued development and expansion of an allied health research network in the South East Melbourne Metropolitan region


Mandatory requirements of the role:

  • Undergraduate/graduate entry qualification in a recognised allied health therapy or science disciplines (as per departmental listing within position description), aligned to the Award
  • The applicant must be a PhD candidate, or within the last 6 months of candidature, or has a conferred qualification obtained no longer than 5 years prior to position commencement date or currently completing a research focused Masters degree.
  • Current AHPRA registration status (for registered professions) or eligibility for membership of professional association (for self‐regulated and non‐regulated professions. Refer to position description for eligible professional background).
  • Current drivers licence.
