Job Description
About the Role
We're looking for an experienced Lead Backend Engineer with strong Node.js skills who can design and deliver robust APIs that power personalised mobile and web experiences. You’ll play a key role in controlling content, feature flags, and user flows from the backend, including things like dynamic, server-driven forms, adaptive web portals, and apps that adjust based on user context or configuration.
Be sure to let us know if you’ve worked on systems like these, for example, building dynamic server-side driven forms or other backend-driven interfaces. Experience with Server-Driven UI (SDUI) is a big plus, but not a must.
Responsibilities
Design, build, and maintain scalable, secure backend services using Node.js
Develop and maintain APIs that support web, mobile, and backend-driven (e.g. SDUI-style) clients
Collaborate with engineers, designers, and product managers to deliver cohesive, high-performance solutions
Contribute to backend architecture and infrastructure decisions, with a focus on scalability, reliability, and maintainability
Lead code reviews and mentor engineers on clean code, performance, and backend best practices
Implement and optimise CI/CD pipelines to support smooth, reliable deployments
Ensure strong observability through thoughtful monitoring, logging, and performance tuning
Work closely with QA and product teams to ship new features and iterate on existing ones
Stay up to date with backend, API design, and cloud trends, and bring fresh thinking to the team
Qualifications
About You
7+ years of backend development experience using Node.js (preferred), TypeScript, Kotlin, Java or similar
Proven experience designing and building scalable APIs and service-oriented architectures
Hands-on experience with backend-driven front-end patterns, e.g. building dynamic, server-driven forms or powering adaptable UI through APIs
Strong understanding of data modelling, with experience using both relational and NoSQL databases
Comfortable working with cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure
Confident with CI/CD pipelines, Git/GitHub workflows, and modern DevOps tooling
Solid grasp of distributed systems, microservices, and concurrency fundamentals
Clear communicator with a collaborative, team-first mindset
Bonus Points
Experience migrating or integrating with legacy systems (e.g. ASP.NET)
Know-how with containerisation tools like Docker and Kubernetes
Exposure to GraphQL, gRPC, or event-driven architectures (e.g. Kafka, SNS/SQS)
Background in fast-paced, product-led or consultancy environments
