Primary objective
Lead a team to provide accurate information and advice in accordance with the policies, protocols and legislation administered by NT
WorkSafe. Ensure compliance with legislation and appropriate allocation of resources within the Workers Rehabilitation and
Compensation unit. Provide high level advice to the Director Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation, the Executive Director, the
Northern Territory Government, and stakeholders.
Context statement
NT WorkSafe is a division of the Department of Business responsible for assisting business and workers understand their obligations
under work health and safety, dangerous goods, electrical safety and workers compensation legislation in the Northern Territory.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Develop workers rehabilitation and compensation policy initiatives in accordance with the organisation’s strategic direction.
2. Provide high level policy advice and specialist technical advice about workers compensation to the Director Rehabilitation and
Compensation, the Executive Director and the Minister as required.
3. Undertake complex, sensitive research and investigations that analyse complex policy development and implementation issues,
including identifying and resolving emerging issues, risks and trends impacting on the successful achievement of key business
objectives, policy initiatives and operational program imperatives.
4. Develop, plan, manage and lead projects that analyse the existing worker compensation policies and environment as well as projects
that implement new or modified programs in line with required outcomes.
5. Represent the organisation in strategic issues groups formed at national and jurisdictional level by Safe Work Australia.
6. Provide high level leadership and direction to the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation team in relation to complaints, requests,
and applications to facilitate maximum coordination and effective use of resources.
7. Identify the level of compliance with legislation and assist in the formulation of practical strategies to overcome non-compliance and
carry out the duties of an Inspector for the purposes of the Return-to-Work Act.
8. Provide and deliver training programs as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. High level leadership and team building skills including ability to articulate a vision, gather support and to translate corporate policy

2. High level interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and ability to negotiate effectively at all levels in government and with
key stakeholders.
3. Proven ability to maximise personal effectiveness and extensive experience in making sound judgements, exercise initiative, discretion,
confidentiality, and problem solving.
4. High level adaptability and flexibility including ability to manage pressure and change in an environment undertaking continuous
improvement and to modify approaches to suit different people and situations.
5. Comprehensive understanding of national and Northern Territory workers compensation schemes and the national Workers
Compensation Strategy.
Desirable
1. Experience in the regulatory field of Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation and investigations.
