Mt Arthur Coal is an open-cut coal mine 100 per cent owned by BHP. Located in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales it's the largest producer of energy coal in the region, operating alongside olive growers, wine makers, horse breeders and the nearby residential community of Muswellbrook.

Reporting to the Superintendent Environment, the Environment Principal - Rehabilitation role will coordinate mine site restoration and rehabilitation works to ensure site closure objectives and regulatory commitments are achieved. Mt Arthur Coal mine has a closure date of 2030 so this is a rare and exciting time at the outset of one of BHP’s largest ever closure projects, particularly for a role in mine site rehabilitation.
You will be required to:
- Prepared to live locally in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales (NSW) as the role is residential
- Coordinate the delivery of mine site rehabilitation in line with site and regulator commitments
- Provide technical advice and support for management of rehabilitation aspects and processes
- Coordinate rehabilitation monitoring
- Coordinate the development rehabilitation plans with schedules and costings.
- Assist in the development of rehabilitation project specific work packs, including final landform designs that can be signed off to BHP Standards
- Collaborate with and advise a large project mine rehabilitation execution team
- Complete regulator reporting on rehabilitation performance
- Coordinate inspections of rehabilitation projects, ensure all milestones are achieved for sign-off to Standard
- Coordinate rehabilitation related contractors
- Experience in mine site rehabilitation, preferably in NSW
- Tertiary Qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or similar
- Ability to engage and work effectively with internal and external stakeholders across all levels
- Working knowledge of relevant state and federal closure rehabilitation standards
- Experience managing projects and working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience in contractor management and safe working practices
- IT literacy, including MS office, Arc GIS software
