This primary purpose of this role is to provide expert legal and governance advice related to the activities of CatholicCare Sydney. The role is responsible for a variety of general legal work including advice work in aged care law, employment law, dispute resolution and complaints handling, and company secretarial duties.
About the Role
Some of your responsibilities will be:
- Provide Strategic Legal Counsel: Offer timely, insightful legal advice to the Board, Chief Executive Officer, and executive leadership on diverse areas including social services, aged care, employment, contract law, WHS, privacy, and more.
- Interpret Complex Legislation: Apply deep knowledge of employment law, dispute resolution, and the Aged Care Act to guide CatholicCare’s decisions and ensure compliance in a highly regulated environment.
- Regulatory Representation: Represent CatholicCare before the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission and other external regulatory bodies, demonstrating professionalism, strategic clarity, and empathy.
- Serve as Company Secretary & Governance Advisor: Support the CatholicCare Sydney Trust and the Audit and Risk Committee in fostering robust governance, ensuring best practice and integrity throughout.
- Manage Litigation & Risk: Oversee all legal risk and liability matters—drafting and responding to letters of demand, managing small claims and alternative dispute resolution, and orchestrating external counsel and insurance claims as needed.
- Collaborate with the Archdiocesan Counsel: Liaise effectively with the General Counsel of the Archdiocese on professional standards matters concerning CatholicCare.
- Provide Regular Oversight: Ensure thorough transparency and board awareness by reporting all litigation matters monthly to both the Board and the General Counsel of the Archdiocese.
About you
To be a successful candidate you will have:
- Ability to undertake the duties of the role in accordance with CatholicCare’s Mission, Vision and Values
- Current Australian Legal Practising Certificate with a of 7+ years of relevant professional experience post-admission with in-house experience desirable
- Experience in Employment and Industrial Law, Dispute Resolution and/or Litigation, and/or Aged Care Law and Company Secretarial Duties
- Sound knowledge of the Aged Care Act, and the Aged Care Regulatory bodies.
- Proven expertise in advising stakeholders on legal risks
- Ability to apply a legal framework to emerging legislative and regulatory changes
- Ability to assess and advise on complex risk as part of providing solutions driven advice
- Excellent stakeholder liaison and consultation skills, strong communication skills with the ability to influence and negotiate at all levels
- High attention to detail with the ability to meet competing deadlines
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with First Nations and CALD colleagues and clients
