Primary objective
Support the implementation and operation of the National Access to Justice Partnership Agreement in the NT by leading
the development and negotiation of contemporary policies and justice reform initiatives that reflect evidence-based practice
and are aligned with national and jurisdictional frameworks and strategies.
Context statement
The Strategic Policy Unit is a specialist team overseeing the development and implementation of significant justice policy
reforms, managing justice sector stakeholder engagement and the management of legal grants.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead the review, development, negotiation and implementation of justice policy, procedures and guidelines to ensure the
National Access to Justice Partnership Agreement is implemented, operates effectively, and is aligned to Commonwealth,
NT Government and Department priorities.
2. Provide high level advice, including preparation of Ministerial briefings, executive correspondence, detailed reporting and
clear analysis of policy, program and project outcomes.
3. Work closely with organisations across the legal assistance sector in the NT to build the sector’s governance and financial
capacity, improve their sustainability and effectiveness, and develop capability to ensure justice reform initiatives are
implemented and maximise Commonwealth and NT Government investment.
4. Develop, maintain and manage collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders in NT Government
agencies, Commonwealth, state and territory jurisdictions and the non-government legal assistance sector.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Highly developed conceptual and analytical thinking that identifies needs and risks and the ability to develop practical
and innovative solutions to proactively resolve complex strategic and operational issues.
2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesise complex information and present it in
clear, actionable formats.
3. Demonstrated experience in undertaking and coordinating work assignments, demonstrating initiative, and planning and
management skills; and demonstrated ability to achieve outcomes working effectively with team members.
4. Exceptional stakeholder management skills including developing, implementing and analysing engagement strategies
tailored to varied audiences and objectives, and an ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
5. Sound appreciation of the issues and the challenges associated with implementing sustainable reform initiatives in a
geographically, socially and culturally diverse environment.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications or experience in a relevant field.
2. Understanding of the NT justice context.
