Your role at St John of God Midland Hospital
We are currently seeking a Pastoral Intern to join our team based at St John of God Midland Hospital. As a Pastoral Internal, you will work in a mentor model learning environment working closely with the Pastoral Services team in supporting patients and their families by offering pastoral care. The internship is aimed at developing and strengthening the requisite pastoral care skills, with the potential of leading to a Pastoral Practitioner role.
The Position
- Recognise spiritual needs of patients/clients and families.
- Offer pastoral care to patients/client and families that continues our culture of healing and hope.
- Assess and reflect on patient/client verbal and non-verbal communication.
- Employ active listening skills to respond compassionately to client’s needs.
- Demonstrate professional boundaries and self-awareness.
- Participate in self-reflection and recognise own areas for improvement.
- Participate in team reflective practice.
- Comply with SJGHC pastoral documentation standard.
- Demonstrate developing ability to recognise and mitigate risk factors that may affect patient/client safety.
- Participate in prayer, worship, reflection and ritual.
- Demonstrate awareness of and respect for cultural diversity in the provision of spiritual care.
- Demonstrate a developing understanding of grief, loss and bereavement issues and complexities.
- Demonstrate an ability to engage with grief, loss and bereavement issues with support.
- All other reasonable duties as directed by Line Manager.
Position Requirements
The successful candidate will have completed a minimum education level equivalent to or higher than a Certificate IV and will demonstrate a solid understanding of pastoral practice. They will show a respectful awareness of diversity across faiths, cultures, and social backgrounds in the delivery of pastoral and spiritual care. A high level of self-awareness and the ability to reflect on personal and professional practice is essential.
The role requires strong collaboration skills, a commitment to continuous professional learning, and a demonstrated level of English comprehension suitable for effective communication and documentation. Prior experience within pastoral care or enrolled in or working towards a formal tertiary qualification in pastoral studies would be highly desirable.

- Salary: $74,627 per annum, plus 12% superannuation
- A Fixed term part time position, working 45.6 hours per fortnight for up to 6 months
