About the role
We are seeking a dedicated Payroll Officer to join our finance team, based in the Melbourne CBD with a hybrid working model (2 days in the office). You will report to the Finance Controller. The ideal candidate will possess strong payroll processing skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to maintaining compliance and accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and process multiple payrolls (fortnightly and monthly), including leave calculations, ensuring accuracy and resolving discrepancies promptly.
- Collect, calculate, and reconcile time and attendance data against contracted hours, leave taken, and relevant modern awards.
- Record payroll journals, determine payroll liabilities (taxes, deductions, leave), and oversee monthly payroll tax returns.
- Maintain and update accurate employee payroll records, ensuring compliance with legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Review payroll with senior team prior to payment and ensure all transactions are processed correctly.
- Compile and prepare payroll reports, summaries of earnings, deductions, and leave, and contribute to financial analysis and management reporting.
- Collaborate with HR, HSE, and finance teams to support payroll reporting, workers’ compensation, and process improvements.
- Stay updated on payroll legislation and compliance requirements to ensure adherence across all payroll activities
Qualifications
About You
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in payroll processing or a similar role.
- Proficiency in payroll software and systems; experience with ELMO and Deputy or similar payroll systems is advantageous.
- Strong analytical skills with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of Australian tax regulations and payroll compliance requirements.
- Certification or membership with relevant professional bodies (e.g., Australian Payroll Association) is desirable.
