About the opportunity

The School of Medical Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Cardiovascular Bioengineering in the Laboratory of Assoc Prof Anna Waterhouse in the Theme of Chronic Diseases, School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health. You will design in vitro and microfluidic-based model systems to evaluate vascular interactions related to medical device complications and endothelial dysfunction. The project involves collaborative research with a team of experts in thrombosis, materials science, surface engineering, patient treatment and industry translation. You will apply and develop expertise in conducting research to further the research agenda of the Lab, School and Faculty. The successful applicant will contribute to research efforts independently asand collaboratively as part of a research team, through an understanding of the subject matter within the discipline.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • design and fabricate in vitro/microfluidic model systems to evaluate vascular cell and protein interactions in healthy and disease states

  • perform a diverse range of cellular, biochemical, biophysical experiments and microscopy experiments to characterise the effects of biological, material and flow parameters

  • demonstrate excellence in data analysis, interpretation of results and directing future experiments

  • write scientific communications intended for publication in refereed journals and assist with preparation of research grant applications

  • Assist in the supervision of graduate and honours level students

  • Interpret and present data to collaborators and develop your profile through presentations at conferences and seminars.

  • develop and refine independent research skills under the supervision of more senior academic staff

  • contribute to a positive workplace culture in which diversity of thought, contribution, collaboration, excellence and achieving outcomes are valued and enabled

  • carry out administrative tasks and contribute to faculty/school meetings and to furthering the university and faculty/school strategic agenda

  • undertake other duties and contribute to projects appropriate within the classification level as required.

About you:

  • PhD degree in a relevant area, such as biomedical engineering, medical sciences, biophysics or biochemistry

  • experience with microfluidics and/or microfabrication and materials analysis techniques

  • experience in cell culture, blood handling/analysis

  • experience in optical microscopy and electron microscopy

  • enthusiasm about multidisciplinary research, translational research and producing good quality publications

  • high levels of motivation and the capacity for independent work as well as team focused

  • demonstrated ability of interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills

  • demonstrated ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks in a busy environment.
