GENERAL SURGERY - UPPER GI FELLOW
Tweed Valley Hospital in conjunction with John Flynn Hospital
We are pleased to announce the continuation of the Fellowship in Upper GI and HPB at both John Flynn Private Hospital (JFPH) and Tweed Valley Hospital (TVH) for a one year period commencing February 2026. The Fellowship offers an outstanding opportunity for training in Upper GI and HPB with a substantial clinical workload in operating sessions, post-operative ward care, acute general surgery and fortnightly multi-disciplinary meetings.
Responsibilities would include the coordination of the Upper GI / HPB Multidisciplinary Team Meeting. The fellowship offers training and experience in Bariatric surgery, HPB, Oesophagogastric and Hernia surgery with a focus on minimally invasive techniques including robotic surgery. There would be an on-call commitment. Medical student teaching at TVH will be part of the responsibility for the position. The holder of the fellowship will also be encouraged to participate in clinical / collaborative research and quality improvement programs.
Applicants should hold a FRACS; be eligible for registration with the AHPRA and NSW Medical Board; have recently completed advanced training in general surgery, and be seeking further experience in Upper GI and HPB surgery and management. The Fellow will work under the supervision of specialist surgeons and assist with private surgical operations.
The successful applicant for the position will be required to hold combined appointments both at JFPH and Tweed Valley Hospital. These appointments are mutually dependent.
You will require personal medical indemnity cover, but employer indemnity will be offered by Ramsay Health Care. You will receive a base salary of 0.5FTE + overtime from Northern NSW Local Health District. Ramsay Health will also pay a base retainer to the Fellow and income will be further supplemented from private surgical assisting, which can be retained in total by the applicant.
Remuneration and conditions for Tweed Valley Hospital are in accordance with the relevant NSW Award. Successful applicants will be required to submit a National Police Check.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Demonstrated past or current clinical practice in an Upper GI Unit of a high standard consistent with the role of a Post Graduate Fellow, with ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary, evidence based best practice.
- Current Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Proven evidence of being a scholar, including a demonstrated commitment to undertake and complete the required Post Graduate Fellowship training program, actively contribute to research activities and the ability to supervise and train junior medical staff.
- Demonstrated evidence of being a skilled communicator, including both oral and written skills, communicating with patients, students, other health professionals and the public.
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills, including the ability to network and operate within an interdisciplinary framework and to work with other stakeholders in a variety of settings.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as a professional attitude and flexibility.
- Evidence of relevant technical expertise undertaking surgery and procedures appropriate to a Post Graduate Fellow's training, skills, expertise and the available facilities including equipment, team, conditions and staffing.
- Valid unrestricted drivers’ licence for use in NSW/Australia and willingness to travel in the course of employment.
