The VirtualKIDS Department at The Sydney Children's Hospital Network are seeking a temporary 0.5FTE (20 hours per
week ) Staff Specialist for 6 months with the potential for increasing FTE or duration to join their team as soon as possible.
Dubbo Base Hospital, affiliated with Sydney Children's Hospital Network virtualKIDS, is a network service aiming to provide virtual care strategy for children in regional and remote locations; in this instance this service will be virtually between SCHN and Western New South Wales Local Health District.
The Staff Specialist will conduct virtual consultations primarily based at SCHN, providing expert assessments, advice, and interventions to support the local community. A virtual examination hub will be established at Dubbo Base Hospital to facilitate virtual examinations, where appropriate, with support from the on-site clinical team at Dubbo Base Hospital. The Staff Specialist will facilitate the formation of a virtual clinic including a virtual acute review clinic to support clinical activities at the Dubbo Base Hospital. The Staff Specialist will also be required to explore collaborative pathways between this service and the Aboriginal Health Services and VCARE.
It will be vital that the Staff Specialist to also participate in face-to-face clinical outreaches to Dubbo Base Hospital or relevant centers to ensure the success of this model of care.
The aim is to improve services and deliver assessments for children with a variety of medical, developmental and behavioral problems in the outpatient setting. Furthermore, there is scope for providing acute care reviews to avoid unnecessary and/ or avoidable emergency presentations and hospitalisation. Our plan is to use the
virtual platforms.
The staff specialist will provide services for the Dubbo Paediatric Department, within the Dubbo Base Hospital and its referral base within the Western LHD. Where appropriate and feasible our Department hopes to have this service integrated with the Sydney Children's Hospital Network Team so that our Dubbo Team stays abreast current best practice. SCHN are the acknowledged experts in the provision of virtual medical care to children, so it is appropriate that integration of SCHN and Western LHD services takes place, where it is possible. The long term goal is to build local expertise in the provision of care in a virtual healthcare model.
