Primary objective
Under the direction of senior staff and in line with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) Strategic Plan – provide
assistance with the establishment, implementation and management of field trials or experiments in a range of cropping
industries in the Katherine/Daly regions.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide support to the senior staff in the design of field trials or experiments.
2. Assist with research trials, demonstration sites and extension projects through sustainable management practices on a
range of agricultural crops in conjunction with DAF staff and stakeholders.
3. Collect data associated with research, extension and development projects; and prepare draft outputs.
4. Participate in the development of research and extension programs within the Plant Industries.
5. Assist with in planning and coordination of demonstrations, field-days and show displays for producers to the public.
6. Assist in supervising and training the support staff to implement the day-to-day field activities.
7. Participate in maintenance and upkeep of the cropping blocks.
8. Knowledge to maintain and operate specialist field equipment and machinery in an operational farm setting, with a focus
on cropping operations.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Approved Diploma in Agriculture/Horticulture or extensive relevant work experience.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of experimental procedures and application of scientific rigour to research in a range of plant-
based industries.
3. Demonstrated ability to conduct field work, with attention to detail, for research and demonstration trials including
monitoring, gathering and collating experimental data.
4. Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills (report writing) including the ability to communicate with
a range of land use stakeholders including traditional landowners.
5. Knowledge and ability to operate specialised equipment and machinery in an operational farm setting.
6. Current driver’s licence Class C or equivalent.
7. Ability to use general computer programs and software.
8. Basic experience in working with tropical field crops or willing to learn.
