Position Overview:

The Cancer Support Health Promotion Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating culturally safe cancer prevention, awareness, and early detection programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

This role works to increase community understanding of cancer risk factors, improve participation in screening programs, and support individuals and families affected by cancer. The officer will also collaborate with internal teams, external health services, and community stakeholders to promote holistic, strength-based health outcomes.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Health Promotion and Education

  • Develop and deliver culturally appropriate education sessions on cancer prevention, early detection, screening, and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Coordinate community events and campaigns to raise awareness of cancers impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (e.g., breast, bowel, cervical, prostate, lung).
  • Promote participation in national cancer screening programs (e.g., Breast Screening, Cervical Screening, Bowel Screening).
  • Produce or adapt culturally relevant health promotion materials (e.g., brochures, posters, social media content).

Community Engagement

  • Build strong relationships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to ensure program relevance and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with Elders, community groups, schools, and partner organisations to support cancer awareness activities.
  • Facilitate community consultation to guide cancer support and prevention initiatives.

Client Support and Advocacy

  • Provide basic support and information to individuals and families affected by cancer and refer to appropriate internal and external services.
  • Work alongside Cancer Support Liaison Officers, Aboriginal Health Workers, and clinical teams to provide holistic care and education.
  • Assist clients in navigating cancer screening or treatment pathways when required.

Program Management and Evaluation

  • Plan, implement and evaluate health promotion projects related to cancer support in line with funding and organisational priorities.
  • Maintain accurate data, records, and reports to support program monitoring and reporting.
  • Contribute to funding reports as required.

Selection Criteria:

Essential

  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (as per Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984).
  • Knowledge and understanding of cancer-related issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Experience in health promotion, community engagement, or public health.
  • Ability to develop and deliver culturally safe and engaging health promotion initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including group facilitation and presentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with community members, health professionals, and stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills.
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to use Microsoft Office programs.
  • Current driver's licence and willingness to travel within the community and region.
  • Ability to obtain a Working with Children Check and National Police Clearance.

Desirable

  • Qualifications in Health Promotion, Public Health, Aboriginal Health, Community Services, or related field.
  • Experience working in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.
  • Familiarity with national cancer screening programs and policies.
