Primary objective
Provide timely and accurate clinical coding of inpatient health information for reporting activities and Activity Based Funding and provide
support and coding advice to other Clinical Coders as required by the local Coding Team Leader.

Context statement
Efficient clinical coding requires thorough knowledge of the International Classification of Diseases/Australian Classification of Healthcare
Interventions (ICD/ACHI) and the Australian Coding Standards (ACS) and reading clinical documentation. The NT Health Information
Service covers all the NT and clinical coders provide coding services to all NT hospitals. This position assists the Coding Team Leader with
effective clinical coding service delivery and participates in coding audit, mentoring and coding education activities.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assign accurate ICD-10-AM/ACHI classification codes to complex casemix, following the Australian Standards for hospital inpatient

episodes utilising the hospital information system (CaresysNT) for optimum DRG assignment/ABF.
2. Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals and co-workers to achieve quality coded information.
3. Maintain ethical practice as per the Australian Coding Standards (ACS)
4. Mentor Clinical Coders, providing advice regarding: ICD-10-AM/ACHI code assignment; interpretation of ACS; national and NT coding

rules/advice; the local clinical specialties and care-types; current IT systems used for abstraction and code assignment, and required
fields for data entry – escalating mentoring issues to Coding Team Leader when required.

5. Undertake coding throughput and quality reporting to assist the Coding Team Leader, Auditor Educators and Coding Manager as
required.

6. Optimise coding throughput and quality by participating in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and professional development
activities.

7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to
ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Completion of a recognised clinical coding course for ICD-10-AM.
2. Minimum 5 years’ experience in ICD-10-AM/ACHI code assignment in an acute care hospital
3. Proven ability in the use of relevant Information Technology (IT) and computerised hospital information systems.
4. Proven ability to organise daily tasks, prioritise workload, work with minimum supervision, and refer problems as necessary.
5. Demonstrated professional, effective communication with healthcare professionals and co-workers, a proven ability to work as part

of a team and an awareness of cross-cultural sensitivity.
6. Knowledge of the Australian Coding Standards, CQI activities and WHS Standards relevant to Clinical Coding

Desirable
1. Degree or Diploma in Health Information Management
